The 6 - 3 UAB Blazers head to Hattiesburg already with bowl-eligiblestatus, but they'll be facing a Southern Miss squad that is 5 - 3 and in search of staking their claim to the post-season as well.

The Blazers' schedule, however, has left much to be desired in 2019, and they are coming off a harsh loss to the Vols, 30 - 7, last weekend in Rocky Top.

While that was happening in Knoxville, the Golden Eagles were sitting home with a bye-week to be ready for this home outing against the Blazers. AN extra week off with 4 games left to play sure does help matters, and the line setters have them favored as well.

History may not be on the Eagles' side in the series with UAB, but that can all be erased with one win this weekend for Jay Hopson's bunch!

Blazers looking to get back on track after beat down in Rocky Top

The Blazers' schedule is something we all have to consider when looking at the UAB defensive stats. Yes, this team is ranked 5th in the nation in total yards allowed and 6th against the pass, noted!

Well, should we honestly make you sit through who UAB has played this season because you have better things to do that could upset your stomach!

As nice as the rankings look for the Blazers defense, their offense has sputtered and the running game is basically non-existent.

Blazers QB Tyler Johnston III looked like a fish out of the water last weekend, as the most recognizable completions he made were to one guy wearing orange! All 3 of his costly interceptions came from the hands of Vols DB Bryce Thompson, and the 30 - 7 loss to Tennessee left the Blazers at 6 - 2.

Johnston has been erratic all season, as the 13 INTs that go along with 15 TD passes tells you a bit of the story. He has a big arm and will sling the ball anywhere on the field, but he may not have the strongest receiving corps surrounding him either. A lot of balls that should be completions have fallen to the ground and some even picked off, but he will still toss the rock around with emphasis. His legs add some value, as he can scramble and pick up first downs, but the UAB running game is extremely lacking in 2019.

Lucious Stanley and Spencer Brown have not exactly had break-out campaigns this year, as they both are barely over 250 apiece leading this team in rushing (269 & 262 yards Resp). Brown only averages 3.3 yards per carry, although the two have found the end zone 8 times combined.

The UAB offense ranks 90th in the country gaining only 142.9 yards on the ground per contest, and their 385 total yards per game number has them ranked 80th in the land in that category.

Oh, and just a small note to offer. Um, both Johnston and Brown are questionable this weekend, and that is your starting QB and 1 of your leading tailbacks possibly out for this game. That would obviously not bode well on the road as underdogs to a Southern Miss team that needs a win to become bowl eligible!

Eagles need a big home win to claim bowl eligibility

The Golden Eagles would love nothing more than to see Johnston and Brown on the sidelines for UAB, but they will still have to gameplan with them in mind. There isn't much to

know about Dylan Hopkins, the backup QB for the Blazers, so they will just have to wait and see who goes like the rest of us.

Regardless, the Eagles have to go out and do what they do best and that is to toss the rock around themselves. Ain't much to talk about when it comes to either of these two teams' running game, with Southern Miss right down low in the rankings.

The Eagles run game ranks 115th out of 130 FBS teams totaling 118.5 ypg, but the passing attack sits 12th in the country putting up 315.1 ypg.

Having won 3 of their last 4 games, this is a game between two 3 - 1 programs in Conference USA play with each team a game back of first-place LA tech at 4 - 0.

Southern Miss already lost to La Tech a few weekends back, so reaching the conference title game would still be a tall order. A 4 - 0 finish to the 2019 regular season could help matters, and this team could pull it off if all goes right down the stretch.

.

Eagles QB Jack Abraham is having a decent junior season with 2,470 passing yards and 13 TD strikes. The second-year starter only needs 2 more TD passes to match his total from last season, and he has already gone over last year's 2,347 total with 4 games to go.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Rating:

With the questionable status of your QB and RB, that makes it tough to put UAB on the board this weekend even with the handful of points.

At -4.5, I just see Southern Mississippi going out and getting the job done to claim their post-season eligibility with a big win this weekend.

I am talking like a 37 - 28 type win because I insist that UAB's defense hasn't been tested yet this season. This is the game they will be exposed and this is the ticket we cash on the chalk with the home team in Hattiesburg! They are NOT what you thought they were!

Southern Miss -4.5 is the play on the side.

Prediction: Southern Miss -4.5

Rating:

37 - 28 means points they are a comin' for us this Saturday in Hattiesburg. Again, I just am simply not convinced that UAB's D is all that and a bag of chips, and those two big injuries could certainly factor into the outcome of this game.

With the home crowd in celebration, I prefer this total to topple the number and come in towards the over for us, so in the books it goes.

Over 50 is the play on the total.

Prediction: Over 50
