UMass Minutemen vs. Army Black Knights Prediction, Preview, and Odds - 11-9-2019
On Saturday afternoon, the UMass Minutemen and Army Black Knights will do battle in this Independents Conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM ET.
Television-wise, the matchup will be broadcast on CBSS.
Minutemen Looking To Have A Close GameUMass is having a rough season. They are 1-8 overall and 0-4 on the road. The Minutemen have also lost four games in a row. In most of their games, they give up 50 plus points, but at least their offense knows how to score. They have been blown out in every game this season, except in their 37-29 win over Akron. Last week, they lost to Liberty 63-21. Quarterback Andrew Brito went 16 for 27, for 134 yards, and two touchdowns.
According to Mass Live, the UMass defense struggled in another loss:
“I don’t think there’s a metric within the game of football where we had very much success today,” UMass coach Walt Bell said. “That was as thorough of a victory as you will see in college football.”
The Minutemen don't know how to play defense. They found some consistent offense sometimes, but that doesn't matter, when you let the other team score on most of their drives. Even when teams get to third down plays against UMass, the opponent still finds a way to keep the chains moving. They will try to work on their rushing yards and maybe not get too blown out for once in a game.
Army Trying To End Their 5 Game Losing StreakThe Army Black Knights are also having a tough season. They are 3-6 overall, just 2-2 at home, and have lost five games in a row. Army has been in a lot of close losses this season and they even almost beat #14 Michigan. This team has okay defense and they love running the ball. Last week, they lost to Air Force 17-13. It was a close, low scoring game, and Army lost the lead in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jabari Laws went 9 for 11, for 214 yards, and one touchdown.
According to SB Nation, defensive back Elijah Riley may be the next Army player to play in the NFL.
The Black Knights have always been good at running the ball, but lately they have struggled to finish in the red zone. This team hardly ever passes the ball and they barely have a quarterback. Most of their game plan is having a lot of rushing depth and just driving up the field as much as they can. Every now and then, Army can get into some three and out situations. The defense has been great on third down stops, but can still try to not give up so many easy drives.

The top supporting trends for UMass, found on Covers.com, are:
- Minutemen are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a losing home record.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Army Black Knights will win this game, but they won't cover the spread. The Knights are the better team in this matchup, but this spread is just way too high for them. Army will get a lot of rushing yards and touchdowns. They will also control the game, time of possession, and all that good stuff. However, their defense still has some issues and sometimes their offense can be stopped right away, because they just stick to the run as much as they can. The Minutemen will get some good drives in, but their defense will let them down again.
Prediction: UMass Minutemen +34
Full-Game Total Pick
UMass has been able to score three to four touchdowns in each of their last three games. However, they also gave up around 60 plus points in those games. This team is use to getting blown out and it will probably happen again this week, but at least they can take advantage of the Army defense for a bit. The Black Knights have been bottled up and trying to get that easy opponent, and now their offense can get going again. Army wins 56-28.
Prediction: Over 62.5
