Georgia State Panthers vs. Memphis Tigers
Where and when: Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, Tennessee, Friday, 7 pm EST
The Panthers of Georgia State will stay on the road in Week 3 while looking to recover from a 41-7 road loss last Saturday at the hands of the NC State Wolfpack as they will take on the Memphis Tigers at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee, on Friday night beginning at 7 pm EST. The Panthers would not cash in on the spread as 25.5-point underdogs against the Wolfpack while the under was the play with the total being set at 56.5 points for the game. The Tigers would also not cash out on the spread in their week 2 matchup as 7-point favorites versus the Navy Midshipmen as they would lose outright by a 22-21 score while the under of 67 points would not be surpassed. This will be their first meeting against each other, however, both will be looking to get back on the winning track by shoring up their pass and run defenses which were the catalyst for their most previous losses.
GSU faded fast versus Wolfpack
The Panthers would not be able to keep pace with the Wolfpack on the road on last Saturday as NC State would exert their dominance en route to a 41-7 win in week 2. Georgia State’s Dan Ellington led the offense with 194 yards passing, however, would be upstaged by Ryan Finley of NC State as he would end the game with 370 yards total with two TD’s. The Panthers will certainly attempt to establish the passing game in their contest versus Memphis as they are averaging 215 yards passing per game, which ranks them 79th in the country.
However, the Tigers defense has allowed only 83 yards passing thus far, ranking them 4th in the nation. Part of that was due to facing triple-option Navy last week. In all, Georgia State will certainly need to establish their running game against a Memphis defensive unit that is allowing 162-yards rushing per game. This means that the Panther offensive line along with running back Destin Coates will certainly have to step up their performances from recent weeks in which to keep Memphis off-balanced and get a win.
Henderson paces the Tigers in loss
After Memphis would obtain a 21-9 lead in the 3rd quarter thanks to Darrell Henderson having 212 yards on the ground along with three scores, Navy would go on to score 13 points in the final period in claiming a 22-21 win last Saturday against Memphis. The Tigers will be looking to utilize their rushing attack that is currently averaging 279 yards this season on a Georgia State defense that has allowed 149 yards on the ground this season, ranking them 73rd in the nation.
Furthermore, the Panthers have allowed their opponents to average 314 passing yards this year, good for only 116th nationally. This should bode well for a passing game led by Brady White that would only obtain 145 passing yards against Navy. I expect the Tigers to take control of the line of scrimmage early in this contest in which to not only exploit the various holes within the Panther defensive front, but, to also neutralize Ellington and the Panther offense to get a win on Saturday.
- Tigers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 Friday games
- Over is 7-1 in Tigers last 8 non-conference games
- Over is 5-1 in Tigers last 6 games after allowing more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game
- Under is 4-0 in Panthers last 4 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game
- Under is 4-0 in Panthers last 4 games following a straight up loss
- Under is 4-0 in Panthers last 4 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Memphis had their game against Navy in hand, however, would totally collapse late in the game, thus signaling their demise. GSU, on the other hand, never had a chance against the Wolfpack once they got rolling last Saturday. Nonetheless, both teams will once again reinforce what made them successful thus far in the season: Ball control, which includes an effective running game along with aggressive, yet, disciplined defense. While Memphis has done a much better job at being consistent in these areas, I certainly see them pulling out a win in this contest, however, I also expect Georgia State to be competitive in this matchup as well, allowing them to cover the huge spread.
Prediction: Pick: Georgia State
Full-Game Total Pick
I will back the under in this game in that while both teams were certainly not able to stop the ground attack from their opponents last Saturday, one must believe that both sqauds will work hard in the days leading up to this matchup in which to correct various defensive issues and concerns. In all, expect a tight game amongst these two teams who are looking to rebound from terrible losses in week 2 with much better performances on the defensive side of the ball on Saturday.
Prediction: Pick: Under 63
Full-Game Prop Bet
I happen to believe that Georgia State will play well in this matchup versus a Memphis team that would let one get away from them on the road versus Navy last week. And while the Panthers would also get pummeled by NC State last weekend, they played well early on. It is for this reason that I expect them to shake off the remnants of that loss in which to play much better on the road versus a Tigers team looking to minimize the damage that Ellington can inflict while taking control of the line up scrimmage. In all, I happen to think that Memphis will run into problems accomplishing this task on Friday night.
Prediction: Pick: Georgia State +28.5
Half-Time Side Pick
As stated, while Memphis will be pumped for their Friday night showdown versus the Panthers and will certainly love to get back onto the field the erase the stench of losing to Navy last weekend, the Panthers will also be looking to get back onto the field to erase the memory of a bad loss to the Wolfpack last week. In all, both will possess huge amounts of focus and intensity in this contest, thus allowing me to take the plus money with Georgia State.
Prediction: Pick: Georgia State +18
Half-Time Total Bet
Due to the motivation that both teams will have in which to take the field with the possibility of getting a huge win, I will pick the over at the half to be the strong play. The fact is that neither team has been strong on defense all year and while I would say that Memphis is a bit more stout than the Panthers, I continue to see this as a matchup to where points will be scored often from both sides. It is for this reason that I will back the over of 39 points at the half.
