Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 9-14-2019
On Saturday afternoon, the Georgia Southern Eagles and Minnesota Golden Gophers will do battle in this Sun Belt Conference vs. Big Ten Conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET.
Television-wise, the matchup will be broadcast on BTN.
Eagles Looking To Build Off Of Week 2 Win
The Georgia Southern Eagles were blown out by LSU in Week 1, but bounced back in Week 2 with a solid 26-18 win over Maine. It was a 16-3 game at the end of the third quarter and then they were able to survive a shootout game in the fourth. Quarterback Justin Tomlin went 4 for 9, for 63 yards, and zero touchdowns. It was all about the rushing game for the Eagles, as they had three rushers rush for over 100 yards. It was insane how much this team ran the ball, but at least they got the job done doing it.
The Eagles will be looking for their first road win of the season. They have three of their last four road games. Tomlin so far has a completion percentage of 41.2 percent and that just won’t cut it against Minnesota. He doesn’t have that many pass attempts because this team relies on the run so much. Their ground game is averaging an incredible 234.5 yards a game and that’s what this team is all about. Running back Matt LaRoche rushed nine times for, 154 yards, and one touchdown, in last weeks game. Look for him to lead the way for this team again.
Head coach Chad Lunsford had this to say about the Eagles okay win last week: “There are some positives in this game, but it’s kind of hard to see those when you see a lot of the mistakes that we made,” said Lunsford. “I think Maine is a good football team and they played hard. But I do wholeheartedly understand that Georgia Southern should be playing a whole lot better than we did tonight.”
Gophers Looking For 3-0 Start
The Minnesota Golden Gophers are 2-0 after two close wins. They beat SD State by seven in Week 1 and in Week 2, they beat the great Fresno State Bulldogs 38-35. The game went to overtime and the Gophers were able to win the shootout. Quarterback Tanner Morgan went 16 for 23, for 234 yards, and two touchdowns. Minnesota did okay rushing the ball. The main Gopher was Rashod Bateman, as he had seven catches, for 105 yards, and one touchdown. The Gophers need to work on their middle of the game production and they should be able to have a better performance in Week 3.
The Gophers have won six of their last eight home games. Morgan is completing 70.7 percent of his passes and he has five touchdown passes in his last three games. Their ground game is averaging 139 yards a game. The Gophers are allowing around 28 points per game on defense. Jordan Howden should lead the way for the defense and put a stop to the Eagles running game. The Gophers need a few more targets to hit with passes and one of their rushers has to match the Eagles rushing game plan. Now if the Gophers defense can play a little tighter and stop the running game, they will be just fine.
Coach P.J. Fleck had this to say about their Week 2 win. “I don’t know if we always get out with a win, but we’re fortunate enough,” Fleck said. “It’s been two games. We’ve been tested. But that’s what the beginning of the season is about. Look all over the country. Many teams, there’s a lot of upsets.
- Golden Gophers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss.
- Golden Gophers are 14-4-3 ATS in their last 21 games following an ATS loss.
- Golden Gophers are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 vs. S-Belt.
Georgia Southern is:
- Eagles are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
- Eagles are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games after accumulating less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.
- Eagles are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games on fieldturf.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Eagles were blown out pretty bad in Week 1 and they almost blew it in the fourth quarter last week. Their scoring has been scattered and they can give up a lot of points out of nowhere because they will do that. Clearly their running game is their go to, they will probably control the clock, and get a few rushing TD’s again.
The Gophers come from a better conference and are usually a ranked team, or at least on the bubble of being one. Minnesota’s offense has been okay so far, but at least they are still scoring a lot with receivers and rushers. The defense needs to keep them in the game or at least be able to protect any close lead they have. Stopping the run game this week will be the key to an easy win.
Prediction: Minnesota Golden Gophers -15.5
Full-Game Total Pick
The Eagles have gone around .500 when they are a double-digit underdog. This team knows how to stay in games and not let the other team getaway. Unless of course they play ranked teams and teams that are on the border of being ranked. They also are a great road team.
The Gophers don’t really blow out that many teams. Most of their wins are close ones, but they know how to take care of business at home when they simply have the more talented team. After a crazy win last week, where they had to go back and forth, they would like to get some early scoring and cruise the rest of the way. Gophers win 32-14.
Prediction: Under 48
