Memphis Tigers vs. South Alabama Jaguars
NCAAF: Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 3:30 PM EST
Memphis has gotten off to a good start on the season and while they used their defense to upset Ole Miss in their opening game, they turned on the offense to win their last game. The Tigers have used a balanced offense in their first two games, and they head into this non-conference game as major betting favorites. This is Memphis’ first road game of the season and they have failed to cover the spread in six of their last eight road games.
South Alabama did not play that bad in losing to a ranked Nebraska team in their opener and they got into the win column in their last game beating Jackson State 37-14.

The Jaguars look to rebound from a 3-9 last season where they lost to Memphis in a barnburner 52-35. South Alabama has failed to cover the spread in 20 of their last 28 games facing a team with a winning record.
Big time 2nd half
Run Jags, run
In their last game facing Jackson State the Jaguars simply could not be stopped on the ground to the tune of 413 rushing yards. The team did not have many passing yards, but there was no need for them to go to the air since they racked up the rushing yards at will. Tra Minter rushed for 189 yards and Jared Wilson chimed in for 95 rushing yards. Cephus Johnson did not have the best game under center and he went 11/18 for 120 yards with a TD but did have two picks.
South Alabama actually had more yards than Nebraska in losing their first game of the season, but, needless to say, their five turnovers hurt them. The Jags have had issues holding onto the rock this season and they cannot have multiple turnovers in this game. Johnson passed for 234 yards in the Nebraska loss, but like the win over Jackson State, he had two interceptions. South Alabama may hit the ground running again like in their last game, as they will be facing a Memphis run defense that gave up 168 rushing yards in their last game.
The South Alabama Jaguars are:
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a winning road record
The Memphis Tigers are:
- 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in September
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I think that Memphis will win this game, but that South Alabama will give them a tough game. The Jaguars run game has to give the Tigers a reason for concern, especially since they did not play great run D in their last game. Memphis has only covered in two of their last eight road games and look for that trend to continue. They will get the win behind a strong offense, but this game will be pretty close, which is why South Alabama will cover the spread.
Prediction: PICK: South Alabama
Full-Game Total Pick
Last season when these two teams played it was a very high scoring game where the total went Over. I see the same thing happening in this game. South Alabama will have a great rushing game and put up a lot of points, but their defense will not keep Memphis from lighting up the scoreboard. for the second season in a row the total will go Over for this non-conference matchup.
Prediction: PICK: Over
