In week three of college football, the Troy Trojans, fresh from a week off, will host the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles from the Veterans Memorial Stadium in Alabama. The Golden Eagles were convincingly thrashed in their previous game, by Mississippi State.
Golden Eagles thrashed by Mississippi State
After scoring 38 points in the first game, the Golden Eagles conceded 38 in the second game, going down to the Mississippi State Bulldogs 38-15 in their second game of the season. The Golden Eagles can take a lot of heart from their second-half performance, in which they scored all their 15 points, and conceded 17.
“Give Mississippi State credit,” head coach Jay Hopson said. “They played a good game and deserved the win. Our guys fought hard. We had some adversity early. I don’t think we came out of the blocks real good in the first quarter. But we got it two scores with (6:31) left to play. Of course, we had a big turnover that sealed the game. We fought hard, but made a lot of mistakes.”
The Golden Eagles had 344 yards of total offense with three turnovers. Jordan Mitchell had five catches for 94 yards receiving, highest of all receivers.
After struggling for the first 40 minutes, in which the Golden Eagles didn’t have a point, Jack Abraham finished strongly, with 16 of 26 completions for 234 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Troy well rested after bye week
The Trojans made a very nice start to their season, cruising past the Campbell Fighting Camels 43-14. The Trojans were given a rest last week.
Offense lighting up
QB Kaleb Parker sparkled in the opener, with 282 yards passing for two touchdowns. RB BJ Smith had 108 yards rushing on 10 carries. Reggie Todd accumulated the same yardage on three receptions, including a touchdown.

The Golden Eagles are going to be much harder to get past for the Trojans than Campbell. They do have the efficiency, and a week’s rest, behind them to use. However, it might be important to note that the Trojans haven’t been tested yet by a quality opponent.
Troy Trojans are:
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following an ATS loss.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in September.
- 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points.
Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles are:
- 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up loss.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Trojans haven’t really faced a strong opponent yet. But there are advantages to that too, including the most obvious: their confidence will be high. They are well-rested after their opener. The Golden Eagles will have scars from their previous loss, and while Troy isn’t Miss State, the Trojans still have a strong resume. The Golden Eagles struggled against the pass in their previous game, and the Trojans might look to capitalize on that.
Prediction: Troy Trojans -3
Full-Game Total Pick
The Trojans offense showed no signs of rush in their season opener. Against a quality opponent in Mississippi State, the Golden Eagles showed flashes of their best in the second half, and although it wasn’t enough, it was still very good. Looking at their offensive yardage from their previous game (Golden Eagles had 344 yards), you could see that translating into an average of about 25 points apiece.
Prediction: Over 49
