UCONN Huskies (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS, 0-1 O/U) vs. Virginia Cavaliers (1-1 SU, 0-2 ATS, 0-2 O/U)
NCAAF: Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 12 p.m. ET Scott Stadium Charlottesville, VA
The Line: Virginia -9.5
UCONN has only played one game on the season and while they got the win it was not very impressive to say the least. The Huskies only won by seven points in facing Holy Cross, who are far from a college football powerhouse and they needed a late rally to win the game.
Virginia is coming off a loss to Indiana where they struggled on both sides of the ball. They had an easy win in their first game beating a cupcake in William and Mary, but playing a team from the Big 10 in Indiana last week they did not look good. The Cavaliers did not run the ball well against Indiana only rushing for 55 yards on a paltry 2.2 yards per carry.
Last season UCONN only won three games, but one of their wins was a 13-10 home victory over Virginia.
4th quarter seals the deal
UCONN beat Hold Cross 27-20 in their opening game of the season where they won the game in the 4th quarter outscoring HC 13-0. Holy Cross had more yards (447 438) and fewer turnovers (2-1), but the Huskies had a more balanced attack. UCONN had 278 passing yards and 160 rushing yards and while they held Holy Cross to only 89 yards on the ground they gave up 358 passing yards. David Pindell passed for 154 yards in the game and Bryant Shirreffs passed for 124 yards with a TD and no INT and he has been named the starter for this game. Nate Hopkins rushed for 130 yards with three TD in the game averaging 6.5 yards per carry and his play will be key in this game.
Run the ball better
Virginia lost to Indiana 34-17 in their last game where they only rushed for 55 yards. Kurt Benkert passed for 259 yards with a TD and no INT and Olamide Zaccheaus led the team with 12 catches for 72 yards. Jordan Ellis was the lead rushed for the Cavaliers and he only had 44 yards on the ground averaging a pretty weak 3.1 yards per carry. He rushed for 80 yards in the season-opening win over Williams & Mary and he needs to help out his QB more, as the Indiana game showed Benkert cannot carry the team with his arm. Last season, UVA won just two games and they lost to the Huskies, 13-10 on the road.
The UCONN Huskies are:
- 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 vs. ACC
- 6-20-1 ATS in their last 27 road games
- 14-36-1 ATS in their last 51 games overall
The Virginia Cavaliers are:
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record
- 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 games following a double-digit loss at home
Virginia lost badly at home in their last game and they lost to UCONN last season, but they are still the pick in this game giving 9.5 points. I cannot take a Huskies team that only beat Holy Cross by seven points and needed a 4th quarter comeback for the win. UVA will show more balance on offense in this game and they will avenge last season’s loss to the Huskies winning and covering the spread as well.
