Cincinnati Bearcats (1-1) at Miami (Ohio) RedHawks (1-1)
When and Where: Saturday, September 16 at 8 p.m. ET at Yager Stadium in Oxford, OH
Line: Miami (OH) -4.5
Cincinnati put a scare into Michigan Saturday, but ultimately the Wolverines flashed too much talent. The Bearcats now travel to Miami to take on a RedHawks team that just beat Austin Peay. The Bearcats, incidentally, also beat Austin Peay this season. Both teams are 1-1 on the season.
Building Off the Michigan Game
Cincinnati had Michigan close into the fourth quarter. Even though the Bearcats offense couldn’t get things going against a tough Michigan defense, the team showed lots of resolve in a tough environment. Cincinnati could’ve laid down and let Michigan win by 30 plus following an opening series touchdown, but the Bearcats didn’t give up so easily. The Bearcats offense scored 26 points in their opening game against Austin Peay. Hayden Moore threw three touchdowns in the win. Moore followed up a solid opening game with one touchdown and two interceptions, including a pick six against Michigan. Moore should have an easier go at it against Miami (OH).
The Bearcats defense showed grittiness against the Wolverines. Against Austin Peay, Cincinnati’s defense allowed only 89 yards through the air, but the Bearcats did allow 224 yards on 60 carries in the opening season win. The Bearcats face a difficult Miami offense, especially with how well Gus Ragland is capable of playing.
All About Gus
Ragland is a really solid quarterback, and he’ll have an opportunity for a nice game against the Bearcats. Ragland has thrown for 443 yards and five touchdowns to one pick on the young season. Ragland lead Miami (OH) in a win over Austin Peay over the weekend. Ragland, however, couldn’t lead the RedHawks over Marshall in the opening game. Ragland relies on James Gardener, while Alonzo Smith has averaged 4.1 yards per game in his 41 rushing attempts on the season.
Miami’s defense has a balanced attack. The RedHawks picked off an Austin Peay pass in their last game. Miami only had one sack in each of its first two games. The RedHawks must do a better job of getting pressure on the quarterback. Watch for De’Andre Montgomery to have a busy game against the Bearcats rushing attack.
- Bearcats are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 non-conference games.
- Bearcats are 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.
- Bearcats are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs. MAC.
- Redhawks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. AAC.
- Redhawks are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win.
Ragland hasn’t been as sharp as Miami would like through his first two game. Ragland needs to be a little more consistent in terms of his efficiency. He should be able to do so against the Bearcats.
