Coastal Carolina vs. UAB, 9-16-2017 - Expert Prediction
Written by: Joseph Phelan
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (1-0) at UAB Blazers (1-1)
When and Where: Saturday, September 16 at 1 p.m. ET at Brooks Stadium in Conway, SC
Line: Coastal Carolina -2
The Chanticleers opened their season two weeks ago with a win over UMass. Coastal Carolina was off last week, though. UAB split its first two games, winnings its debut over Alabama A&M before dropping to Ball State over this past weekend.
Coastal Carolina had a bye week this past weekend, so the Chanticleers hope to remain undefeated against a below average UAB team. Coastal Carolina took care of UMass 38-28. Coastal Carolina ran and ran all over UMass, but the team barely threw the ball. On the game, the Chanticleers averaged an amazing 6.8 yards per carry, led by Osharmar Abercrombie. The senior dropped 149 yards with two touchdowns.
Coastal Carolina struggled defensively some against UMass. The Chanticleers allowed 441 yards, which was more than their offense put up despite securing the win. UAB’s offense has been electric so far, averaging over 460 yards per game. UAB should be able to put up some points on Coastal Carolina. Coastal Carolina did force and recover two fumbles. Andrew Ford threw over 300 yards against Coastal Carolina’s shaky secondary.
The Blazers dropped to Ball State over the weekend. UAB’s offense has been solid early on, and its defense hasn’t been bad, either. The Blazers have allowed a shade under 30 points per game, which isn’t great, but UAB only allows 280 yards per game on the season. The Blazers have a tough challenge Saturday against Abercrombie in Coastal Carolina’s backfield. The Blazers have done fantastic against the pass, while Coastal Carolina rarely threw the ball against UMass.
Erdely has been solid this year. He’s completed 59 percent of his passes for two touchdowns and zero interceptions through two games. UAB throw the ball sparingly, but its running game has been terrific thus far. Moving forward, UAB should be able to open up the passing game, especially if Erdely remains this accurate. The Blazers running game is led by freshman Spencer Brown. Brown has 24 carries for 193 yards and a score on the season. Expect him to continue to excel.
- Blazers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss.
- Blazers are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
- Blazers are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games after accumulating less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.
No trends available for Coastal Carolina.
UAB should feel confident heading into this game, especially with how well Spencer Brown has run the ball during his first two career games. The Blazers, however, are home underdogs. Coastal Carolina hasn’t played in two weeks, but even though the team’s well rested look for the Blazers to secure a win.
