Fresno State Bulldogs (1-1) at Washington Huskies (2-0)
When and Where: Saturday, September 16 at 9:30 p.m. ET at Husky Stadium in Seattle, WA
Line: Washington -33
Fresno State split its first two games of the season, the Bulldogs lost 41-0 to Alabama after beating Incarnate Word 66-0 in an absolute pointless game. The Huskies took care of Rutgers and Montana. Rutgers gave the Huskies a bit of a scare in Newark to open the season as Washington won 30-15.
Hoping to Full Off an Upset
The Bulldogs had a tough matchup this past weekend as they faced the Alabama Crimson Tide. Fresno State did beat up the lowly Incarnate Word in week 1. Fresno State’s offense mustered up 274 total yards against the best team in the country. The Bulldogs scored a field goal in the first quarter, before Derrion Grim caught a touchdown pass from Chason Virgil in the fourth quarter. Virgil flashed some moments against a really tough Alabama. Fresno State’s offensive line showcased some encouraging signs, too, allowing only one sack and three tackles for losses against the dominant Crimson Tide.
Fresno State’s offense could do some positive things against Washington, who lost plenty of talent from last year’s team. Fresno State’s defense, however, could struggle against Jake Browning and Company. Jalen Hurts needed only 10 carries to rush for 154 and two scores Saturday. Fresno State’s defense was not a match for Alabama’s rushing attack as the Crimson Tide ran for over 300 yards.
Keeping Things Rolling
Browning has thrown for 543 yards, four touchdowns and one interceptions through two games. The Huskies have been a balanced offense with Myles Gaskin, a junior, has provided a terrific boost in the run and passing game. Gaskin had over 170 total yards in the win over Rutgers. He’s average over six yards per carry. As a team the Huskies are averaging a shade under five yards a clip.
The Huskies defense lost lots of their secondary to the NFL. Washington struggled at times against Rutgers, but the Huskies made up for in during their last matchup against Montana as Montana scored only a touchdown. Washington has a tougher matchup against the upstart Fresno State squad. The Bulldogs must feel confident for at least staying close with Alabama for a little while Saturday.
- Bulldogs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
- Bulldogs are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.
- Bulldogs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
- Bulldogs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a straight up loss of more than 20 points.
- Bulldogs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games on fieldturf.
- Huskies are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.
Washington has a clear advantage here, but the Bulldogs were feisty against Alabama over the weekend. The Huskies defense should be able to contain Fresno State’s offense, but guys like Ronnie Rivers could find some success against Washington. The Huskies win, but the Bulldogs, building off some strong momentum, keep it relatively close.
