Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (1-1) at Louisiana Monroe Warhawks (0-1)
NCAAF: Saturday, September 16, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. ET
Line: Southern Miss -6.5
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles hit the road to take on the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks for a Saturday night contest. UL Monroe’s contest against no. 10 ranked Florida State was suspended on Sept. 9 due to Hurricane Irma. The Warhawks offense is led by multiple quarterbacks in Garrett Smith and Caleb Evans. The pair of quarterbacks struggled with mistakes as they combined for 13 interceptions last season. Southern Miss is looking to build off a successful year in which they went 7-6 last season. The Golden Eagles are led by Kwadra Griggs who has 431 passing yards and four touchdowns this season.
Golden Eagles shut out Jaguars
On Saturday night, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles defeated the Southern Jaguars 45-0. The Golden Eagles took a 28-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Griggs led the Golden Eagles with 209 passing yards and two touchdowns. Backup quarterback Keon Howard entered the game in the third quarter had 71 passing yards. T’Rod Taylor led the Golden Eagles with 83 rushing yards and Ito Smith had 77. Southern Miss dominated the possession of the game as they had the ball for 36 minutes. The Golden Eagles had 477 total yards while holding the Jaguars to 140. Allenzae Staggers led Southern Miss with 62 receiving yards and a touchdown on five receptions.
Louisiana Monroe looking to take the next step
The Louisiana Monroe Warhawks have had their fair share of struggles in recent years. Here are the win totals for the Warhawks over the last three seasons: 4, 2, and 4. Last year, the Warhawks were led by Garrett Smith and Caleb Evans. Smith had 1,237 passing yards, and Evans added 834. The problem is that the pair of signal-callers combined for 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Louisiana Monroe didn’t have a standout running back as the leading rusher was Ben Luckett who had 450 yards. If the Warhawks want to threaten in the Sun Belt Conference they must improve their ground game. Their rushing defense looks like a concern as well as they allowed 319 rush yards to Memphis in their opener.
The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles are:
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
- 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 games in September.
- 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 non-conference games.
The Louisiana Monroe Warhawks are:
- 7-17-1 ATS in their last 25 home games.
- 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games after allowing more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up loss.
Southern Miss has too much firepower for a UL Monroe offense with concerns. Look for Griggs to lead the Golden Eagles to a convincing road win.
