Virginia Tech Hokies (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS, 0-1-1 O/U) vs. East Carolina Pirates (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS, 1-1 O/U)
NCAAF: Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. ET Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Greenville, NC
The Line: Virginia Tech -18.5
Virginia Tech has gotten off to a solid start to the season beating a ranked West Virginia team in their season opener and then shutting out cupcake Delaware in their last game. They head to East Carolina to where they are major road betting favorites against a Pirates team that has lost their first two games.
While Tech beat West Virginia in their first game of the season East Carolina lost to them in their last game where they gave up 56 points. They have given up 90 points in their first two games and after only two games they reassigned defensive coordinator Kenwick Thompson and he will not longer be on the sidelines.
These teams met last season at Virginia Tech where the Hokies laid a 54-17 beating on the Pirates.
Defense pitches the shutout
Virginia Tech beat Delaware 27-0 in their last game getting the shutout and holding Delaware to only 223 total yards. The Hokies did not have a ton of yards (303) and only rushed for 81 yards, but they forced two turnovers and held Delaware to 5 for 18 on 3rd down. QB Josh Jackson had a solid game going 16 for 28 for 22 yards with two TD and 0 INT, but only rushed for 19 yards. Cam Phillips and Sean Savoy combined for 153 receiving yards and Jalen Holston was the lead rusher with only 32 yards. Jackson rushed for 101yards in the win over West Virginia and if ECU has any chance to pull off the upset they have to figure out a way to contain the Tech QB.
Giving up a ton of yards
In their last game, East Carolina lost to West Virginia 56-20 where they gave up 614 total yards. They gave up 403 passing yards and 211 rushing yards and they also committed two turnovers. They did have 470 yards in the game on offense, but the defense could not stop WVU. Thomas Sirk was 16 for 34 for 191 yards with a TD and two INT and he left with an injury and Gardner Minshew (7/13 137 yards 1 TD 0 INT) finished the game. Sirk is a question mark for this game. Tyshon Dye and Hussein Howe combined to rush for 125 yards in the game and they have to run the ball well in this game to keep the ECU defense on the sidelines. The Pirates have given up over 600 yards in each of their first two games.
The Virginia Tech Hokies are:
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games
The East Carolina Pirates are:
- 8-26 ATS vs. a team with a winning record
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games in September
- 7-21 ATS in their last 28 games following a straight up loss of more than 20 points
While ECU has covered the spread in seven of their last eight games facing teams from the ACC, but they are only 1-4 ATS in their last five home games and 0-4 in their last four non-conference games. Have to go with a ranked Tech in this one even giving a lot of points on the road, as I can’t take a Pirates team that is 0-2 and has give up over 1,200 yards in their first two games.
