The Appalachian State Mountaineers and Marshall Thundering Herd were both members of the Southern Conference years ago and this is their first meeting since 2002. The Mountaineers lead the series 14-8 and look to continue but this isn’t like the games back in the day. Appalachian State is the 23rd ranked team in the nation and is looking to break into the Top-20 for the first time in program history.
This is the first season with head coach Shawn Clark leading the Mountaineers after being the assistant head coach last year. He takes over for Eliah Drinkwitz, who moved on to Missouri after just one season in Boone, North Carolina. The biggest issue with Clark's first game as the main guy was three turnovers against Charlotte. However, Thomas Hennigan had a big game on the receiving end with five catches for 120 yards and a touchdown.
Appalachian State has gone from -3.5 up to -5 and that is consistent with the fact that the Mountaineers have grabbed 61% of the bets.
The OU Line has gone from 57 up to 59.5, with the Over snatching up 73% of the bets.
Gametime Weather: Sunny with temps in the mid to upper 60s
Replacing Darrynton EvansDarrynton Evans had an incredible season last year as he had 1,480 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns. However, he was drafted in the third round by the Tennessee Titans in April. How can the Appalachian State Mountaineers replace his production? It isn’t going to be easy.
The answer seems to be having a three-headed monster in the backfield as Marcus Williams Jr, Camerun Peoples, and Daetrich Harrington combined for 279 yards and four touchdowns in the season opener against the Charlotte 49ers.
Appalachian State’s Injury Report
Out: WR Raykwon Anderson, QB David Baldwin-Griffin, and WR Corey Sutton
Well Rested Equals Well Played?Marshall had their game scheduled for last weekend against East Carolina postponed due to COVID and hopes to reschedule the game. This means the Thundering Herd hasn’t played since September 5th when they demolished the Eastern Kentucky team 59-0.
Marshall had an incredible game as they dominated all three facets of the game and finished with 627 yards of total offense while only allowing 166. Freshman Grant Wells had a solid start to his collegiate career as he went 16-of-23 with 307 yards and four touchdowns. It will be seen if the unexpected bye week will make the Thundering Herd come out well-rested or if it will take a drive or two to get back into rhythm.
Marshall’s Injury Report
- Marshall is 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games
- Marshall is 4-8 in their last 12 games
- Appalachian State is 19-1 in their last 20 games
- Appalachian State is 22-10 ATS in their last 32 games
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Mountaineers have a football program going in the right direction as they are 19-1 in their last 20 games. They have to be a great football program to be the 23rd ranked team in the nation. Senior quarterback Zac Thomas has 50 career touchdown passes with 13 interceptions in his collegiate career. He had a subpar game last week against the Charlotte 49ers, but expect a better game out of him to lead the Mountaineers to their second victory of the season.
Prediction: Appalachian State to win & cover -3.5
Full-Game Total Pick
Marshall is coming into this game with a dominant 59-0 victory over Eastern Kentucky. All they needed was some momentum as EKU and the Mountaineers are two completely different programs. The Thundering Herd had freshman quarterback start his career right with four touchdown passes. With a rested Thundering Herd team and a solid Mountaineer team, this could easily go over.
Prediction: Over 56.5
