Owls look to build on another successful season

Last season

The Owls were fantastic last season, winning the Conference USA title. That was the second time they won it in three seasons. They ended the season on five straight wins, which culminated in a 52-28 win against SMU in the Boca Raton bowl.

Offensive performance

The Owls built their success in the air last season. They generated 282.6 yards passing per game, which put the 29th in the country. Their running game was steady with 166 yards per game. Overall, their 36.3 points per game was 60th nationally.

Quite solid. The Owls like to move the ball quickly in the air, which means there can occasionally be a high interception rate. They conceded an average of 22.3 points per game, 98th in the country.

Werts helps Eagles eke past Campbell in opener

Early-season form

The Eagles began the new season with a clutch 27-26 win over Campbell in the opener. That game will fill the Eagles will confidence for a tough game, especially after trailing 13-6 at halftime.

QB performance

Shai Werts had 155 yards on the rush, and finished 7 of 13 in the air as he put up just 53 yards, including a one-yard touchdown pass. He will be desperately required against a strong Eagles defense.

According to the Associated Press, the game was delayed 40 minutes because of lightning. Campbell listed 17 players and Georgia Southern had 16 players inactive for the game due to various reasons.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

At face value, you can argue that the Eagles have played one game. There is at least some momentum in their play. However, the Owls have had some additional rest and time to prepare for this game, which will play a massive part in this game. Shai Werts was decent in the season opener but he'll find the Eagles defense a different kettle of fish.

Prediction: FAU -2.5

Full-Game Total Pick

This is an interesting market. The Owls should score at least 20 points, with the majority coming on at least two touchdowns. However, it will be interesting to see if the Eagles can stay abreast. If they can, then this should move to the over. Even if they don't, I can see enough completed passes and long drives that eventually end in scoring plays. The Eagles scored 27 points in the first game. Expect something similar.

Prediction: Over 47.5
