No surprise that Wake Forest was blown out in their opener against top-ranked Clemson and they look to get in the win column facing NC State, who is playing in their first game.
The Demon Deacons could get nothing going facing Clemson in their opener where they could not deal with the Tigers' defensive front line in a 37-13 loss.
"We are disappointed with the result, but I think there's a lot of positives to build on." - Coach Clawsonhttps://t.co/JKPgMTZseu— Wake Forest Football (@WakeFB) September 13, 2020
This time around they face an NC State team that they crushed last season 44-10. Wake won eight games last season and they will be gunning for their fourth win in a row against conference rival NC State.
Last season the Wolfpack went through growing pains, big time, going 4-8, and only winning one conference game. However, they have most of their key players back including some talented running backs. NC State could really use a W in this game to get off to a solid start and after this game faces two teams that are currently in the top 25.
Got To Get It Done with Another Monster Coming UpNot only did Wake Forest lose to top-ranked Clemson in their first game, but after this one face another beast in seventh-ranked Notre Dame. In the loss against Clemson, the team had 293 passing yards but only rushed for 37 yards on 34 carries and I am no math whiz but don’t think that equates to a good per carry average. The Demon Deacons used three quarterbacks in the last game and Sam Hartman, who passed for 182 yards with no TD and no INT will get the start in this game. He did not face the Wolfpack last season as a freshman where he passed for 830 yards with four TD and two INT.
Taylor Morin and Jaquarii Roberson combined for 185 receiving yards with a TD in the Clemson game with Donavon Greene chipping in with 76 receiving yards. This trio will be a handful for the Wolfpack, who only ranked 103rd in the nation last season in pass defense and may have issues in the secondary again. Christian Beal-Smith led Wake with only 29 rushing yards in the opener and last season rushed for 304 yards but did not face NC State.
Forget About Last SeasonNC State heads into this season with higher expectations with many returning players and they have to forget last season. They especially have to forget the bad 44-10 loss to Wake where they only gained 265 yards, gave up nearly 300 passing yards, and turned the ball over three times without forcing a turnover.
QB Devin Leary is penciled to get the start in this game and last season passed for 1,219 yards with eight TD and five picks. Some of the top receivers return but what will be key for the Wolfpack on offense in this game will be the play of the two RB’s of Zonovan Knight and Jordan Houston. Knight led the team last season rushing for 745 yards and Houston rushed for 526 yards and each averaged over five yards per carry. While the Wolfpack has some key players back they need to improve on last season where they only ranked 12th in the ACC in scoring offense and 11th in overall yards.
The NC State Wolfpack are:
- 5-16 ATS in their last 21 games overall
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games
- 0-6 ATS in their last 6 conference games
- 0-4 ATS vs. a team with a losing record
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are:
- 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games as a road underdog
- 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games in September
- 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
While Wake Forest is only 0-4-1 ATS in their last five road games NC State has failed to cover in five of their last six home games and in their last six conference games. I look for those last two trends to continue. This game will not be a blowout like last season but just like last season the Demon Deacons will get the W. They will be able to pass the ball against a suspect NC State defense and their defense will play better than they did in the season opener facing the #1 team in the nation. Wake will get their first win of the season and get ready for Notre Dame in their next game.
Prediction: Wake Forest +1
Full-Game Total Pick
I am leaning towards the Under in this game, as I see Wake playing a pretty good defensive game facing a NC State team that had major issues scoring last season. The Demon Deacons will have a good passing game, but they will not light up the scoreboard. On the other side of the coin the Wolfpack may pick up some yards on the ground but their scoring issues from last season will carry in this season in their opener. Don’t look for a barnburner in this ACC matchup, as the Under is THE pick.
