Arizona State Sun Devils at Washington Huskies
NCAAF: Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 10:30 p.m. ET
After moving to 2-0 in Herm Edwards first season as the Arizona State head coach beating a ranked Michigan team the Sun Devils fell from the ranks of the unbeaten in their last game. After giving up a total of 20 points in their first two games the Sun Devils gave up 28 in their last one in a 28-21 road loss to San Diego State. This is ASU’s first Pac 12 game of the season and last season at home they upset Washington, who were ranked 5th in the nation at the time.
Tenth-ranked Washington got over their tough loss to Auburn in their season opener by winning their last two games. They played great defense in their last game, which was a 21-7 win over Utah and also their Pac 12 opener. The Huskies are the big betting favorite in this game because they are at home and have a defense that ranks 11th in the nation only giving up an average of 10.3 ppg.
Not only is ASU 15-2-2 ATS in their last 19 games facing Washington, but are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games against them on the road.
Not the best run game
In their last game, Arizona State lost to San Diego State 28-21 where they gave up 311 rushing yards and also only rushed for 36 yards. Overall, they gave up 440 total yards and that is not good heading north to play Washington, who have a great defense. Manny Wilkins passed for 341 yards with two TD and no INT and Frank Darby led the Sun Devils with 127 receiving yards. Eno Benjamin was the lead rusher with only 21 yards on the ground and he only averaged 1.6 yards per carry. Wilkins leads the ASU offense and he has passed for over 340 yards in each of his last two games and on the season he has seven TD and has only been picked off once.
Washington ranks 10th in the nation in pass defense, which is key in this conference matchup, as the Sun Devils rank a legit 19th in the nation in passing yards per game, but only tied for 112th in rushing yards per game.
Great game on D
Washington was on the road in their last game and they beat Utah 21-7 where they had a great game on defense. They held the Utes to 261 total yards and they forced three turnovers. The Huskies gave up a TD to Utah in the first quarter, but then shut them out the rest of the game. Washington was led by the run game on offense with 172 rushing yards and Myles Gaskin led the way with 143 yards. Jake Browning was decent under center going 14/24 for 155 yards with a TD and an INT. Gaskin had totaled 128 yards in his first two games of the season before going for 143 in the win over Utah.
Washington was led by Browning and company in the first two games and the ASU pass defense has struggled this season. Arizona State came into their last game facing SDSU with the nation’s top-ranked run defense before getting torched on the ground against the Aztecs.
The Washington Huskies are:
- 9-3 ATS in their last 12 conference games
- 7-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record
The Arizona State Sun Devils are:
- 6-14 ATS in their last 20 road games
- 40-2 ATS in their last 60 road games vs. a team with a winning home record
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Have to take Washington in this one even giving a lot of points simply because of the defense they have. They will shut down the Sun Devils in this game and on the other side of the coin look for Gaskins and Browning to have big games. Washington will move to 2-0 in Pac 12 play with a win in this game at home and they will also cover the big spread. That will snap their streak of failing to cover in their last eight home games facing the Sun Devils.
Prediction: PICK: Washington
Full-Game Total Pick
The Huskies will shut down the Sun Devils on defense and on offense they will score points, but not light up the scoreboard, which is why the Under is the smart pick in this Pac 12 encounter.
Prediction: PICK: Under
