We have the Big 12 Conference to consider for Saturday afternoon when the Kansas Jayhawks meet the Baylor Bears. Kansas opened its season with a 38-23 home loss to Coastal Carolina and Baylor had its opening game canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. The Bears lead their head to head series 15-4 including a 61-6 stomping last season at Kansas.
Jayhawks Upset By Coastal CarolinaCoastal Carolina scored 28 first-half points and never looked back in a 38-23 thumping over the Jayhawks. Kansas outgained the Chanticleers 367-318 but three Jayhawks turnovers were their undoing. Kansas gets to regroup before hitting the road for their first conference matchup against the Baylor Bears.

Junior quarterback Miles Kendrick completed 15-24 passes for 156 yards and a pair of touchdowns but threw an interception. Senior wideout Kwamie Lassiter hauled in five balls for 63 yards with a touchdown and senior wide receiver Andrew Parchment caught six balls for 54 yards and a scoring strike for the Jayhawks.
The Jayhawks rushed for 178 yards and leading the way with 81 yards and a touchdown on 11 attempts was sophomore running back Velton Gardner. Junior running back Pooka Williams rushed for 67 yards on 12 carries to lead the ground attack.
Kansas allowed 318 total yards of offense against Coastal Carolina; 133 of those yards were via the air and 185 rushing yards was how the Chanticleers scored their 38 points. The Jayhawks weren’t able to force any turnovers and leading the way with eight solo tackles and 11 tackles overall was senior linebacker Dru Prox.
Baylor New Coaching StaffBaylor was set to begin its 2020 season last week against the Houston Cougars but the game was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. Baylor is coming off an 11-3 season but suffered a loss to the Georgia Bulldogs in last seasons Sugar Bowl. First-year head coach Dave Aranda is tasked with improving the team overall and Larry Fedora has been brought in as the new offensive coordinator.
The Bears return seven offensive starters from last year's squad and senior quarterback Charlie Brewer is coming off a 3161 passing yard season with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions along with 334 rushing yards and 11 trips to the end zone. Brewer has a pair of junior wideouts to throw to; Tyquan Thornton and RJ Sneed combined for 1219 receiving yards with eight touchdowns.
Senior running back John Lovett returns from a season where he rushed for 655 yards with five touchdowns and the Bears will also look to senior running back Trestan Ebner is coming off of a 250 yard, three-touchdown season with an additional 317 receiving yards with a pair of scores.
The defense has some work to do as it will have just two returning starters from a defense that allowed just over 19 points per game. Junior linebacker Terrel Bernard led the team with 112 tackles and will be the leader of a defense that allowed 217 passing yards and 142.9 rushing yards per game last season.
- Bears are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 conference games.
- Bears are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
- Bears are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games on grass.
- Jayhawks are 8-24-1 ATS in their last 33 games in September.
- Jayhawks are 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games on grass.
- Jayhawks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Baylor opened as an 18.5 point favorite and the line is now at 16.5 points. That number seems about right for a strong offense with a suspect defense up against a team that was embarrassed at home by a lesser opponent. Brewer and the offense are about as solid as can be and I don’t see them having that much trouble scoring points against the Jayhawks. Kansas has a decent offense but its defense leaves something to be desired and I don’t see them doing much to stop the Bears. I will lay the points and take the Bears to cover the spread.
Full-Game Total Pick
Vegas posted a 59.5 point total that has now moved to 61.5 points. I think that number is low for this game. We have the strong Baylor offense up against a soft Kansas defense and we have a decent Kansas offense up against a brand new Bears defense. I think this one is a back and forth game with Baylor scoring three more touchdowns than Kansas. My final score for this game is 42-21 and I will be playing the OVER in this contest.
