The Boston College Eagles (1-0) prepare for their second game of the season where they’ll take on the Texas State Bobcats (1-2). The Eagles ended the 2019 season tied for fourth in the ACC Atlantic, with a conference record of 4-4 and an overall record of 6-7. The Bobcats finished out last season fourth in the Sunbelt West. They had a 2-6 record within the conference and a 3-9 record overall. This will be the first time that these teams have faced off against each other.

Bobcats Hope To Build Road Streak

After dropping their first two games of the season, Texas State has finally picked up a win. It was during their first game away from home that they found their first victory, and it was their first game of the season that was decided by more than 10 points. In their previous matchups, they lost by a narrow margin, 7 points and 3 points respectively. The Bobcats getting their first win on the road is a welcome sight. Last season, they went 0-6 on the road. Their first road win of 2020 was also their first conference win of the season. They faced off against the UL Monroe Warhawks and picked up a 38-17 victory.

Texas State had 398 yards in their win over the Warhawks, with 256 passing yards and 142 rushing yards. Freshman Calvin Hill led the team with 14 carries. He would run in the first touchdown of the game. The team went with Tyler Vitt as the quarterback over Memphis transfer Brady McBride for the second game in a row. Vitt completed 14 of his 21 attempted passes with two of those being touchdown passes. He would run in one touchdown as well. Jeremiah Haydel had 152 receiving yards, with two touchdowns in the first half of the game. Jarron Morris had a big play to close out the game. He scored on a 100-yard interception return in the final seconds of the contest to give his team just a little extra padding on the backend of their first road victory.

Eagles Look To Keep Momentum After Season-Opening Win

Boston College has had a solid first outing under the command of new coach Jeff Hafley. They started their season on the road, facing off against a conference rival in the Duke Blue Devils. They picked up the win in that game, beating a struggling Devils team 26-6. This was done under the watchful eye of new quarterback Phil Jurkovec. The sophomore is a transfer from Notre Dame, who is ranked 7th in the nation this season. It was his first start since his senior year of high school in 2017. In his new team’s 26-6 victory over the Blue Devils, Jurkovec connected on 17 of his 23 pass attempts. He threw 300 yards and one interception and had two touchdown passes in the final minutes of the third quarter.

In total, Boston had 384 yards. The majority of those were the 300 passing yards from Jurkovec, while the remaining 84 were rushing. The team had 42 rushing attempts and averaged only 2 yards per rush. David Bailey led the team with 51 rushing yards. He would have 18 carries and one touchdown off the opening drive. Zay Flowers ended the contest with 162 receiving yards. He averaged 32.4 yards and scored one touchdown. Kicking in two field goals, as well as getting the extra points on two of the team’s three touchdowns was Danny Longman. The junior had 8 of the team’s total points in the victory.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Rating:

The Bobcats did not have a good season in 2019. It was far from the worst in the country or even the worst in the conference, but it wasn’t the kind of play that brings a team to a bowl game. And, since that poor season, they haven’t made many big moves. The Eagles, on the other hand, had a stronger 2019 season, and they’ve been improving their roster and staff in the offseason. The two main talking points are their new coach and new quarterback, who have both already been mentioned. Though there is only a small sample of one game to look to for how well these changes have been working, Boston has certainly looked like the stronger team of the two, and will likely win this matchup.

Rating:

For two teams that are considered to have a struggling offense, in their first few games, both teams have managed a respectable amount of points. Once again, there’s not much to draw on for Boston, but their 26 point victory is a decent, though not outstanding, performance. The Bobcats have managed 110 points across their three games played prior to their contest against the Eagles. The more games that these teams get under their belts, the more they’ll come together as a unit. They’ll work out the early season kinks that every team faces in the first few games of the season, and their offense will only grow in confidence and ability.
