We have non-conference NCAA football to discuss for Saturday night when the Troy Trojans take on the eighteenth ranked BYU Cougars at Lavell Edwards Stadium. Both teams have begun their seasons with victories and the game will be played without fans in the stands. Can Troy pull off an upset or will BYU handle the pesky Trojans with ease?

Line Movements:

There has been slight movement on the line in this contest. BYU opened as a 15.5-point favorite and things haven't changed all that much since that point in time. At this stage, the Cougars are still solid 14.5-point favorites in the game. In addition, they are drawing 59 percent of the bets against the spread in this one.

The over/under has headed down in this contest as well. After originally coming out with a total of 63 points, it has declined to 60.5 points as of early Saturday morning. A whopping 82 percent of bets on the total have gone on the under in this one.

Game-time Weather: The temperature at kickoff for this one is expected to be in the mid-60s with temperatures dropping to right around 60 by the time the game should come to an end. There is no rain in the forecast, though there will be some intermittent cloud cover during the contest. Winds are expected to come out of the northwest around 10 to 15 miles per hour.

Troy Hammers Middle Tennessee State

Troy got its season started in a big way with a 47-14 thrashing over the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders last Saturday at Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium. The Trojans racked up 496 yards of total offense and were never behind once last Saturday.

Sophomore quarterback Gunnar Watson had a big night, throwing for 248 yards and a pair of scores with one interception. Senior wideout Khalil McClain was the main recipient of Watson’s prowess, hauling in six balls for 75 yards and a pair of scoring strikes and junior wide receiver Bret Clark caught six passes for 59 yards to lead the aerial assault on the Blue Raiders.

The Trojans rushed for 240 yards and four touchdowns against the Blue Raiders. Leading the way with 81 yards on ten carries was senior running back B.J. Smith. Charles Strong, D.K. Billingsley, Kimani Vidal and Carloss Crawford each scored touchdowns to lead a strong Trojans ground attack.

The defense held the Blue Raiders to just 14 points and 241 total yards of offense. Middle Tennessee State gained 154 yards via the air and 87 rushing yards on the day. Junior cornerback Terence Dunlap picked off a pair of passes and junior safety Craig Slocum also intercepted a pass.

Injury Report:

No injuries reported.

BYU Destroys Navy

BYU hasn’t played a game since September 7, 2020, but they crushed Navy that day by a score of 55-3 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Cougars amassed 580 yards of total offense and were on cruise control from the kick-off to the closing whistle.

Junior quarterback Zach Wilson had a huge afternoon, completing 13-18 passes for 232 yards and a pair of touchdown strikes. Wilson also chucked an interception and scampered for an additional seven yards. Junior wideout Gunner Romney hauled in four balls for 134 yards and a touchdown and senior running back Lopini Katoa caught a touchdown pass.

The Cougars gained 301 rushing yards and leading the way with 132 yards on 14 attempts with two trips to the end zone was sophomore running back Tyler Allgeier. Katoa rushed for 80 yards and a pair of scores and frosh running back Jackson McChesney scampered for 56 yards and a touchdown.

BYU held Navy to just 149 yards and bottled up the triple option as if they had Navy’s playbook. The Cougars allowed 119 rushing yards and just 30 passing yards including a fumble recovery. BYU failed to intercept a pass and junior linebacker Pepe Tanuvasa had a team-high eight tackles on the day.

Injury Report:

OUT: LB Chaz Ah You, TE Matt Bushman, OL Triston Hoge, RB Jackson McChesney

Questionable: RB Sione Finau, QB Jaren Hall

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Rating:

BYU is currently a 14 point favorite at home and I think the Cougars can cover that spread. They are a complete team and while we don’t want to place too much stock in their thrashing over Navy, they did look very impressive running as well as passing the football. Troy looked equally impressive in their victory against the Blue Raiders but BYU is at a different level on both sides of the ball and I will lay the points and take the Cougars to cover the spread against the Trojans.

Prediction: BYU

Rating:

Vegas set the total at 61 points and I suspect that number is too low. These are two strong offenses and even though BYU should easily cover the spread, they won’t keep the speedy and determined Trojans offense from finding the end zone. I suspect this is going to be a high scoring game on national TV and the offenses are going to take over, the Cougars will get a few more defensive stops and the sides will exceed the total. I will play the OVER in this contest.
