The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles will be looking for their first win of the season when they host the Tulane Green Wave on Saturday evening. Tulane are 1-1 for the season after losing the previous game in bizarre fashion.

Tulane collapse after taking 24-0 lead

Season form

The Green Wave have had two 27-24 games to start the new season, one in a win and one in a loss. Although, they should have won both. Tulane blew a 24-0 lead to lose 27-24 to Navy in the previous game.

Tulane had a 24-0 lead at halftime, but conceded 16 points in the third quarter to let Navy back in. Eventually, they tied the game and kicked a field goal as the time expired. Tyjae Spears rushed for 119 yards in the game.

What was said? (According to the Associated Press)

"This is tough," Tulane linebacker Nick Anderson said. "It's something we've got to swallow and man up."

"Obviously, we'd like to have it back," said Green Wave coach Willie Fritz.

Southern Miss go 0-2 after thrilling defeat

Season form

The Golden Eagles have suffered two defeats to start the season. After a 32-21 loss in the season opener, Southern Miss was beaten 31-30 in a thriller against Louisiana Tech in the previous game.

Jack Abraham had a solid game. He had a completion rate of 75% as he finished with 24 of 32 passing for 264 yards, with three TDs and an interception. As a wide receiver, Tim Jones had 160 yards on eight receptions and two TDs.

According to the Associated Press, it was interim coach Scott Walden's debut for the Golden Eagles. He replaced Jay Hopson of Sept. 7. Hopson was 28-23 in five seasons at Southern Miss. Capacity was limited to 25% at 36,000-seat M.M. Roberts Stadium. Six feet of social distancing was required and tailgating prohibited.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

Tulane has a lot more depth in their roster. Despite losing the previous game in the manner they did, the difference in skill and quality will make a difference, particularly after a week's rest to refresh and reset. The Golden Eagles have lost two straight games to start the season, which will make a massive difference to their own confidence and momentum as well.

Prediction: Tulane Green Wave -3.5

This is quite tight. It might come down to the last couple of minutes with a single possession to decide this. At face value, both teams have averaged well over 50 points in both of their games combined. Tulane have had two games in which 51 points were scored. The Golden Eagles have conceded over 30 points in both their games. Overall, this should sneak over.

Prediction: Over 54.5
