(This game has been postponed)
South Florida is coming off an embarrassing blowout loss in their last game and they hit the road to face FAU, who are playing in their first game of the season.
After a win in their season-opener, the Bulls were throttled in their last game losing seventh-ranked Notre Dame 52-0. The team needs to get over that bad loss and they look for their second win over FAU, which would get them to the halfway point of last season’s four-win campaign.
FAU will be playing in their season opener after their first game facing Georgia Southern was canceled after 11 players on the team tested positive for COVID-19. While the team has a new QB the Owls look to continue their success from last season when they went 11-3 and won a bowl game.
These teams last met in the 2016 season.
Shutout Against the Big BoySouth Florida did not have the best showing against a ranked Notre Dame team in their last game, major understatement, when they were blown out and were down 35-0 at halftime. They were only 2/15 on third down and their defense gave up 281 rushing yards. Jordan McCloud and Noah Johnson split time under center and combined for 125 yards and neither was picked off. Look for McCloud to get most of the snaps in this game as he did in the 27-6 win over The Citadel in their opener where he passed for 68 yards with a TD. Johnny Ford led the team with 70 rushing yards in the loss to Notre Dame with most coming on a 42-yard carry.
Last season the Bulls won two of their four games on the road. USF is 1-1 ATS this season and last season was 6-6 ATS.
Big Loss for the OwlsThe Owls had a great 2019 season winning 11 games and winning the Conference USA championship but they lost star QB Chris Robison, who has had off-the-field issues in his career and is no longer on the team. FAU has not given details on why he is no longer with the team. Junior Nick Tronti takes over under center and last season in limited action passed for 180 yards with two TD and one INT. The team also lost TE Harrison Bryant, who led the Owls in receiving yards last season, and the top two receivers. Malcolm Davidson is back after leading FAU with 711 rushing yards last season and nine TD.
Last season FAU was 5-2 at home and was a strong betting team going 10-4 ATS.
The FAU Owls are:
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a favorite
The USF Bulls are:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 vs. Conference USA
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Bulls were crushed on the road in their last game and the team looks to rebound from that loss back on the road in this non-conference affair. The Owls had a great 2019 season but lost their starting QB and a few of his main targets. Still, the team has a talented squad on both sides of the ball and their leading RB returns. There are a lot of question marks for FAU but they still have a more talented team than USF. The team will also be more rested playing their first game while the Bulls have already played two games. I think the Owls will have some growing pains in this opener and they will not crush USF but they will win and cover the spread in their house.
Full-Game Total Pick
I am leaning towards the under in this game with the uncertainties on offense for FAU. On top of that USF was shut out in their last game and in their opener only scored 27 points on a Citadel team that has scored six points in two games and given up 76 points. I look for both teams to have a ground heavy attack in this game, where there will not be many offensive fireworks. USF has an Under record of 3-1-1 in their last five non-conference games and FAU has an Under record of 8-3 in their last 11 home games. Look for those trends to continue in this non-conference affair where the Under is the solid pick.
