49ers vs. Seahawks, 01/01/17 - Prediction & Preview
Written by: Jeffrey Stevens
Seattle Seahawks (9-5-1 SU, 7-7-1 ATS) vs. San Francisco 49ers (2-13 SU, 3-11-1 ATS)
NFL: Sunday, January 1, 2016 at 4:25 p.m. ET
Line: Seattle -9.5
The Seattle Seahawks will wrap up the regular season this Sunday against the 49ers in San Francisco. Seattle has already cliched the division and will be in the playoffs this year, so it is doubtful their starters will see a whole lot of time on the field. The 49ers are going to show up for the game and see what happens. San Francisco is currently in a fierce battle for a top pick in next year’s NFL Draft and wouldn’t want to do anything that might mess that up.
Seahawks Run Over Los Angeles
The Seattle Seahawks were in a shootout against the Cardinals last week and came up with the short end of the stick, falling 34-31 due to an Arizona field goal as time expired. Seattle was able to out gain the Cardinals 391 total yards to 370, as well as win the first down battle 21-24. Russell Wilson gave it his all in the losing effort, tossing the ball for 350 yards and four touchdowns on 29 of 45 attempts. Wilson was also able to scramble for 36 yards on the ground, making him the team’s leading rusher.
It wasn’t quite the year the Seahawks were looking for, but they did enough to win a surprisingly weak division. They will still have a chance to move up in the seeding depending on the outcome of this game and what happens with Green Bay. I still don’t expect the starters to see a whole lot of time on the field in this one. Seattle has been plagued with one injury after the other this year and the extra time to heal will be a huge help.
49ers Ready For 2017
The San Francisco 49ers were able to put another notch in the win column with a 22-21 win over the St. Louis Rams last week. Collin Kaepernick was able to throw a 10 yard pass for a touchdown with just :31 left in the game and then ran the ball across the goal line on the two-point conversion for the win. Kaepernick finished the game with 266 passing yards and two scores while completing 28 of 38 attempts. Only one of them ended up in the hands of a player on the other team.
San Fran has had a tough go of it this year and have to be looking forward to the season coming to an end. The 49ers have several areas that need to be addressed and they will have a high enough pick in the first round of next year’s draft to take care of at least one of them. The team struggled with the ball on offense this season, only scoring an average of 19.1 points per game. Moving the ball on the ground was the back bone of the 49ers with the team averaging 130.5 rushing yards per contest. Their is still a lot to be decided about just who fits where as the team begins to make preparations for next season.
- 3-6 ATS in their previous 9 games on the road.
- 5-0 ATS in the previous 5 games against San Francisco.
San Francisco is:
- 2-11-1 ATS in their previous 14 games.
- 0-5 ATS in their previous 5 games at home.
There won’t really be much to watch for in this one. The Seahawks have already clinched and the 49ers will be finished for the year after the game. I am expecting the Seahawks to play some backups, so San Fran will have a shot to cover the points.
Pick: San Francisco +9.5
I think even with Seattle keeping things on cruise, the two teams will do enough with the ball to go over in this one. The San Francisco players will have one last chance to have their name written down for next season and the Seahawks will do what they can to come up with the win. Seattle 27- San Francisco 20.
Pick: Total Over 43
