Chicago Bears vs. New York Giants Predictions, Preview, and Odds – 8-16-2019
On Friday night, the Chicago Bears and New York Giants will do battle in this NFC North vs NFC East division matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET.
Television-wise, the matchup will be broadcast on NFLN (NFL Network)
Bears Looking To Spark Offense And Defense In Week 2
The Chicago Bears had an amazing 2018 season. They finished first in the NFC North, had a 12-4 record, and the best defense in the league. Some people thought that they could take down the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints, and find themselves in the Super Bowl. Instead, they took a tough, last-minute loss, to those pesky Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card game. It’s been a long offseason since that game and in week 1, the Bears didn’t look like themselves.
The Bears lost their week 1 preseason game 23-13 to the Carolina Panthers. Carolina had a below-average 2018 season and they are probably happy with how they played against such an elite team. The Bears had their usual great defense in the first half, but pretty slow offensively. In the second half, the offense went away completely and the defense gave up the lead. Chase Daniel played well and was very efficient in the passing game. He went 11 for 13, for 120 yards total. The rushing game was okay for the Bears, with a few guys getting some work in. For the receivers, they could have had one or two more guys getting more yards for them. For this game, Ian Bunting made the most of his 3 catches and went for 77 yards total.
The Bears have lost the last two games against the Giants. Chicago is the better defensively, but the offense was a mystery in that week 1 game. If they play well the full 60 minutes, then they can win a close game against New York.
Giants Look To Build On Solid Win Over Jets
The New York Giants had a rough 2018 season. They were last in the NFC East, finished with a 5-11 record, and were 1-5 against their division. Also, the Giants were 12th in points allowed in the conference. The Giants still have some talented veterans on the team and in week 1 of the preseason, the team looked sharp.
In week 1, the Giants beat the New York Jets 31-22. It was a slightly back and forth game, with three lead changes. The Jets were just as weak as the Giants in 2018 and this made for a great game. The Giants usual quarterback Eli Manning only did one snap and it was a 3-yard pass. It was all about Alex Tanney at the QB spot. Tanney went 14 for 19, for 190 passing yards, and one touchdown. The rushing game didn’t do much with Wayne Gallman leading the way. He rushed 5 times, for a total of 13 yards. New York relied on their receivers and a good chunk of them had good numbers. Ty Jones led the way with 6 catches, for a total of 72 yards, and 1 touchdown. The defense played decently, got a few sacks, and 1 interception. Good first half offensively and good defense to keep the lead in the second half.

New York played the Bears last year and beat them 30-27. It was a surprising win against a Bears team, who had the best defense in the league. The Giants blew a 10 point, fourth quarter lead, but went on to win in overtime on a field goal. The total yards were pretty even and the New York defense made the Bears turn the ball over 3 times. The Giants were able to keep up with the Bears, they will be able to do it again.
New York is:
- Giants are 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 games on fieldturf.
- Giants are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 home games.
- Giants are 1-3 in last 4 games, going back to last season.
- Bears are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
- Bears are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.
- Bears are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 vs. NFC.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Bears are 1-4 in their last five meetings with the Giants, but most of those games have been close. Also, Chicago has been getting better every year, while the Giants have stayed the same or find some problem out of nowhere.
When a loss happens, you pinpoint the main issues for it, even if you get outplayed. The Bears defense held the line for most of that week 1 game, but eventually the Panthers broke through. Chicago can’t always rely on the defense to set up good scoring. They need success on both sides of the ball.
Prediction: Chicago Bears +1.5
Full-Game Total Pick
Despite having a good defense, when the Bears play the Giants, it is a high scoring affair. The last three meetings have been in the 38-57 range.
With it being preseason, look for the over/under to be right around that 41.5 have number, but just barely under. Bears win 21-17.
Prediction: Under 41.5
