The New York Giants and New York Jets will play their annual preseason matchup in their shared home of MetLife Stadium. The Giants have come out on top in each of the last two seasons in this game. Neither team had the best 2017 season last year, both finishing at the bottoms of their divisions. The Giants went 3-13 for the second-worst record in the NFL while the Jets were only slightly better at 5-11.
So far this preseason, the New York Giants are 1-1 with a loss to the Cleveland Browns and a win over the Detroit Lions. Last week, they defeated the Lions 30-17 behind great performances from Davis Webb and Wayne Gallman. The Jets are 1-1 as well, beating the Falcons in their first game and dropping the second to the Redskins. Sam Darnold and Teddy Bridgewater each threw a pick in the loss and seven of the Jets 13 points came from their kicker, Taylor Bertolet.
Giants find some depth in the backfield
The New York Giants had an unexpectedly terrible year and would love to bounce back. Unfortunately, the big names that can make that happen such as Beckham and Manning will likely not much time, if any, this preseason. Eli Manning, Saquon Barkley, and Odell Beckham all sat out last week and at the very least, Beckham should sit out again this week. Other top tier players for New York like Sterling Shepard and Evan Engram saw very limited action as well. All signs point toward the Giants second team taking on a very large portion of the workload on Friday.
Running that second team offense will be Davis Webb. The second-year quarterback out of California has shown some promise this preseason. Last week in the win over the Lions, he went 14/20 with 140 yards and a touchdown. He greatly improved his completion percentage from the first game and still has not thrown an interception in over 40 passes this year. With Barkley out and Johnathan Stewart having a poor showing, Wayne Gallman stepped up to make a statement last week. He took five carries for 26 yards and a touchdown and added another TD through the air. The Giants seem to finally have some legitimate depth in the backfield.
Defensively, Mark Herzlich led the charge against the Lions. He led the team with seven tackles, making him the only player with more than four on the day. As a team, New York also had four sacks to show some improvement on the defensive line. With that being said, no one on the first team offense recorded a sack, An interception from Ray-Ray Armstrong did give them some confidence in the depth of their secondary though.
Jets defense leads the way in preseason
The biggest question for the Jets is obviously the debate regarding who should start at quarterback. Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater, and Sam Darnold are all in the race to take over the starting position. McCown has been very limited and only threw one pass all preseason but he may get to play for at least on drive on Friday. Bridgewater looks fully recovered from his gruesome injury and has been very accurate as a passer through two games while remaining mobile. Sam Darnold, the first round draft pick for New York, is 21/29 through two games so far with 158 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
The running game of the Jets has been a big question for them this season. Isaiah Crowell is currently tops on the depth chart but after missing the second preseason game with a concussion, he is a question mark in their lineup. New York has not scored a rushing touchdown yet this preseason and no single back has stuck out. Charles Johnson has been the surprise standout receiver for the Jets. In his two games, he has caught five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. He will be looking to bump up his spot on the depth chart and could be a dangerous target in this game.
Defensively, the Jets have been solid as a unit despite no one in particular standing out. They managed t blank the Falcons in their win and even held the Redskins to 15 in defeat. Terrence Brooks leads the team in tackles with eight and is looking for some reps at safety this season. In last week’s game, Doug Middleton picked off a pass and added two tackles. The Jets do not have any single defensive stars but they look pretty solid as a unit.
- 1-5 in last six home games vs. teams coming off an ATS win
- 5-1 in last six games off an ATS win
- 4-1-1 in last six meetings with the Jets
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Giants are simply the deeper team coming into this one. They have far more going on in the backfield than the Jets. Barkley is a rising start but even when he comes out early, players like Stewart and Backman will be there to keep the ball moving. The Giants are also very deep at receiver and tight end and will give their young quarterbacks a chance.
The only place the Jets have an advantage in their quarterback depth but that does not matter if they have no one to throw it to. The Jets receiving has not stood out so far this season while the Giants have made sure that they have options in the secondary. The Giants should be able to control this game from start to finish and take the win.
Prediction: New York Giants
Full-Game Total Pick
The Jets defense has been solid as expected this season and their offense has not scored much at all. The total points in the two Jets games this preseason came to 17 and 28. The Giants have been able to score against the Browns and Lions but they might be in for a tougher task against the Jets. The Giants defense has also been surprisingly good, allowing a total of 27 points.
Prediction: Under 42 -110
Full-Game Prop Bet
The Giants did not give up more than 20 points in either of their first two games against the Browns or the Lions. The Jets offense is right on par with both of those teams but with less of a passing game than Detroit. If the Giants defense plays exactly how they have been, the under should be a good pick.
Prediction: Jets score Under 22 -110
Half-Time Side Pick
The newfound depth of the Giants rushing attacks should make all the difference in this one. With more depth than usual in the secondary, they should be able to keep the Jets passing game at bay while eating the clock and putting up points with quality running from Backmon and Stewart.
Prediction: New York Giants +110
Half-Time Total Bet
Both of these teams looked better on offense than they did at any point last season in their first pair of preseason games. Without much going on in the Giants passing game in this week and the Jets likely resting their top starters too, the defenses should have a pretty big advantage.
Prediction: Under 21 -115
