San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs Predictions, Preview, and Odds – 8-24-2019
On Saturday night, the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will do battle in this NFC West vs AFC West division matchup. Kickoff is set for 8:00 PM ET.
Television-wise, the matchup will be broadcast on KPIX 5.
49ers Ready For Tough Chiefs Team
The San Francisco 49ers are due for a great season and if they stay healthy this upcoming season, then most people think that they will be in a wild card spot. The Niners haven’t had a winning season since 2013 and they had to slowly build up another playoff team, and go through a few coaches in the process. In 2018, San Francisco was 4-12, third in the NFC West, and 2-10 in conference play. Also, they were an awful 0-8 on the road. The Niners starting quarterback and running back were injured last season, and for the most part, the team had a lot of close games, that they just failed to capitalize on critical moments.
Looking at the preseason week 1 game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Niners played pretty well, even though it was mostly second and third-string players playing. The Niners beat the Cowboys 17-9, and the defense shutout Dallas in the second half. C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens had almost the same statistics in the game. Beathard went 13/17, with 141 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. Mullens went 11/17, with 105 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. Now Mullens should get the backup role this season because he was the better quarterback in stats and leading this team when Jimmy Garoppolo went down with an injury. Beathard had a few good games but mostly came up short, in some of those close losses last season. The rushing was okay and with the receivers, a lot of guys got some catches in. Deebo Samuel stood out with his 2 catches, for a total of 61 yards.

Now the 49ers don’t play the Chiefs that much. Lately, Kansas City has been the better team and Arrowhead Stadium is one of the loudest stadiums around. The 49ers have lost five regular-season games in a row at KC. The Chiefs are one of those teams that are amazing at home and can sometimes look lost on the road. Even though it is preseason, the Niners want to work on those road games because they didn’t win away last season. Get the offense going early, dictate the game, and have that shutdown defense again in the second half.
A player to continue to look out for this preseason is Jalen Hurd. He is a running back, turned wide receiver, and he caught both 49ers touchdowns in week 1. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had this to say: “He plays very physical,” Shanahan said following Hurd’s preseason debut. “He’s in good shape, runs hard, has strong hands. Just trying to pick up the offense. Had a few mistakes (on Saturday), but played pretty well and it was a good first night for him.”
Chiefs Looking To Get Offense Going Again
The Kansas City Chiefs had another great NFL season in 2018. They were tied for first with the best record in the AFC with 12 wins and 4 losses. They had the second-best home record at 7-1 and they scored the most points in the NFL with 565. The Chiefs were also 10-2 in the conference overall.
The Chiefs had two completely different performances so far in preseason. In week 1, they beat the Cincinnati Bengals 38-17 and then lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 17-7. Against the Bengals, they played well in the middle of the game on offense and the defense was solid throughout the game. The Chiefs defense picked up 2 fumbles and 2 interceptions, and really set a nice tone for the game. However, against the Steelers, the offense was a little sloppy and not as efficient. They lost 3 fumbles and just couldn’t find the endzone. The defense was solid until the fourth quarter. Deon Yelder was consistent in both games with catches and maybe the Chiefs will regroup well at home, with some more starters as well.
Rookie WR Mecole Hardman has had a solid camp and Coach Andy Reid discussed the progress he has made.
“He has grown a lot since we first got him here. Figuring it all out. I like his progress. He has attacked it,” Reid said. “We talk about where he started and where he’s at now, it’s a completely different level. You can tell by the respect that he gets from the guys and the respect he has in return for the veteran players. They’ve accepted him in there and he has worked hard to gain all of that respect.”
Kansas City has the better roster on paper if they play most of their starters, which should be the case. They also have home-field advantage. After their sloppy effort against the Steelers, they will make adjustments against a Niners defense that is actually on the rise. The Chiefs have won by 10 plus points, the last three times the Niners have come to town.
- Under is 50-23-1 in Chiefs last 74 home games.
San Francisco is:
- 49ers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
- 49ers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games.
- 49ers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 meetings in Kansas City.

Full-Game Side Bet
Well, the 49ers finally won a road game and it was an impressive one against the Broncos. Jimmy G didn’t play that well and maybe he will get more snaps in week 3. The 49ers defense set up some scoring for the offense and the backup QBs of Beathard and Mullens will still be going on.
Chiefs will probably have more starters playing and a turnaround game from a poor effort against the Steelers. This should be a close game with the way the defenses have played and both teams have some stand out weapons in receiving.
Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs
Full-Game Total Pick
The 49ers have been good at keeping teams out of the endzone and just letting a few field goals go. The Chiefs scored 38 points and then 7. So, they will be somewhere in between that. Maybe more towards the 7 with a confident Niners defense.
Kansas City is a high powered offense, but San Francisco can keep up against good teams. They showed it a bit in last seasons meeting with the Chiefs, but they failed to come back because the game was done at halftime. Chiefs win 21-17.
