The Line: Miami Dolphins -6
The Miami Dolphins head to New Jersey next on their road trip to face the New York Jets at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins started their season with a quality win against the Los Angeles Chargers, while the Jets were thrashed by the Oakland Raiders.
Dolphins clinical in season opener
The Miami Dolphins put up an upset 19-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers to begin their season brightly. With a little over a minute to go, Cody Parker converted his field-goal attempt to put the Dolphins ahead, and Younghoe Koo missed his field goal with five seconds on the clock.
Jay Cutler added 230 passing yards, while Jay Ajayi racked up 122 rushing yards. But it was Parker’s four field goals that contributed the most to the Dolphins’ offense.
After a slow start, the Chargers had made a strong comeback to take a 10-3 lead into halftime, but the Dolphins’ extra rest showed in an energetic, determined second half.
Jets humiliated by Raiders offense
The New York Jets were not allowed to breathe as the Oakland Raiders cruised to, by the NFL’s standards, an easy 45-20 win. Josh McCown and Jermaine Kearse combined for two touchdowns, but there wasn’t much in the Jets’ tank.
“We might have grown as a team with this loss,” Todd Bowles told reporters. “The guys started believing in each other and they played hard. We just can’t have mistakes here and there.”
What the Jets need quickly is to shore up their defense. They have allowed 33 points a game so far, which puts them 31st in the NFL.
Miami Dolphins are:
- 6-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
- 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games after allowing more than 350 total yards in their previous game.
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. AFC East.
- 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games following an ATS win.
New York Jets are:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
- 1-5 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in September.
Confidence is such an important factor in sports that it can influence the careers of players. The Dolphins have gained plenty after they beat the Chargers in a game many didn’t expect them to compete in. They’ll take the lessons from that into a game against a team that is struggling to boost their morale.
