Dallas Stars vs. Los Angeles Kings, 01/09/17 - Preview & Prediction
Written by: Jason Green
Dallas Stars (16-16-8 SU 14-26 PL, 18-22 O/U) at L.A. kings (20-16-4 SU, 20-120 PL, 12-21 O/U)
NHL: Monday January 9, 2017 at 10:30 p.m. ET
The Line: LA Kings -150/Dallas +130
The Stars have lost their last three games and the reason for the losses has been their defense, which has given up 11 goals in the three games. The defense has been the big issue in the Big D this season, as Dallas only ranks 28th in the league in goals allowed. However, the last time they faced L.A. late last month at home they did get the W. The Stars have the 3rd fewest points in the Western Conference.
The Kings have won three of their last four games and in the last two of those wins they won in OT. L.A. is hanging on in the playoff race, as if the season ended today they would be the 8th seed in the West. Their D has been solid this season ranking 7th in goals allowed, but their offense only ranks 21st in goals per game. The Stars have won seven of their last 10 games facing the Kings in L.A.
Poor D strikes again
The Stars were, once again, thwarted by a poor defensive effort in their last game where they lost to the St. Louis Blues 4-3. They had more shots in the game and only gave up 22 shots total, but still gave up four goals. Lauri Korpikoski, Patrick Eaves, and John Klingberg all found the back of the net for Dallas, but they went scoreless in the 3rd quarter giving up a goal with less than two minutes left for the loss. Kari Lehtonen (9-10-4 2.82 GAA) only made 11 saves on 14 shots before getting pulled for Antti Niemi (7-6-4 2.97 GAA), who gave up a goal on eight shots. The Stars are only 5-10-4 on the road this season.
L.A. overcomes early deficit for OT win
In the Kings last game they beat the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in OT after being down 2-0 after the first period. Four different players scored for the Kings and Jeff Carter got the scoring going in the 2nd period for his 22 goal of the season and he ranks 2nd in the NHL in goals scored. L.A. pressed the envelope on offense with 36 shots in the game, which was12 more than the Wild had. GK Peter Budaj (18-10-3 2.03 GAA) did not have the best game only stopping 21 of 24 shots and the three goals was the most he had given up in eight starts.
Carter is the player the Dallas D really has to key on, as he has 14 points and 11more goals than the players that ranks 2nd in those categories on the Kings. This season L.A. is 12-5-1 at home.
The Dallas Stars are:
- 2-8 in their last 10 road games
- 0-5 in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600
The L.A. Kings are:
- 12-5 in their last 17 home games
- 42-18 in their last 60 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400
- 7-3 in their last 10 games playing on 1 days rest
The Kings are coming off a four-goal win and they will get another W in this game facing a Dallas team that has lost three in a row.
I dig every sport and the NFL is my favorite. My team is the Redskins and my 2nd favorite is whoever is playing the Cowboys! I am a great handicapper and if you don’t believe me just ask. I don’t just write about betting on games I actually bet on them and I have done well, which is why it is a good idea to follow my picks.
