Colorado Avalanche vs. Anaheim Ducks, 01/12/17 - Expert Prediction
Written by: Jason Green
Anaheim Ducks (22-13-8 SU 23-20 PL, 14-17 O/U) at Colorado Avalanche (13-25-1 SU, 16-23 PL, 16-19 O/U)
NHL: Thursday January 12, 2017 at 9 p.m. ET
The Line: Anaheim -160/Colorado +140
The Ducks have won four of their last five games and they shut out the Dallas Stars in their last game. Their defense has been playing well as of late only giving up a total of four goals in their last four games. Anaheim is tied for first place in the Pacific Division with the San Jose Sharks and they have the 3rd most points in the Western Conference. The Ducks rank 16th in the league in goals per game and 12th in goals against, They have won 10 of their last 16 games facing the Avalanche in Colorado.
The Avs snapped their five game losing streak with an OT win in their last game and that was only their 2nd win in their last 12 games. They held the New York Islanders to one goal in their last game while in their five game skid before that they had given up a total of 23 goals. Colorado has the fewest points in the NHL and it is pretty easy to see why since they rank dead last in the league in both goals per game and goals against.
Gibson pitches a shutout
Ducks’ G John Gibson (16-10-7 2.38 GAA) stopped 33 of 34 shots in the last game in a 2-0 win over the Dallas Stars to get the shutout. H has been playing well lately and in his last four starts he has two shutouts and in the other two games gave up two goals in each. Jakob Silfverberg scored his 12th goal on the season on a power play in the first period and Andrew Coglian scored his 10th in the 3rd period for the two goals for the Ducks.
Ryan Kesler leads three Anaheim players that have at least 30 points and he and Rickard Rakell each have 16 goals. While the Ducks have been great at home this season they are only 8-8-6 on the road.
Stopped the bleeding with defense
The Avalanche stopped their five-game losing streak by playing solid defense in their last game in a 2-1 OT win over the Islanders. They have not had many games where their D carried them this season and in this game to look for only their 3rd two game win streak of the season. Nathan MacKinnon scored in OT to give Colorado the win over Edmonton and he also had an assist in the other goal in the game scored by Gabriel Landeskog. The win over the Oilers was the first on home ice since mid-November. GK Calvin Pickard (7-11-1 3.06 GAA) had a solid game stopping 35 of 36 shots and in his previous three starts he had given up a total of 13 goals.
The less than dynamic Avs’ offense is led by MacKinnon (27 points) and only three players have over 20 points. Matt Duchene leads the team with 13 goals. Colorado is 5-13-1 at home this season.
The Anaheim Ducks are:
- 4-1 in their last 5 overall
- 4-1 in their last 5 vs. a team with a losing record
- 4-0 in their last 4 after scoring 2 goals or less in their previous game
The Colorado Avalanche are:
17-35 in their last 52 overall
- 7-20 in their last 27 home games
- 7-22 in their last 29 vs. Western Conference
- 1-10 in their last 11 games following a win
The Avs are coming off a win, but they will not get two in a row in this game. The Ducks have a more balanced team and they will get the W in this road game.
I dig every sport and the NFL is my favorite. My team is the Redskins and my 2nd favorite is whoever is playing the Cowboys! I am a great handicapper and if you don’t believe me just ask. I don’t just write about betting on games I actually bet on them and I have done well, which is why it is a good idea to follow my picks.
