Boston Bruins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets
NHL: Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 7:00 PM EST
The Bruins had their three-game win streak snapped in their last game where their defense let them down. That has not happened often this season for the club, as they rank second in the league in GAA. Boston has the second-most points in the Eastern Conference, and they are only one point back of the Washington Capitals.
The Blue Jackets have won three of their last four games and had a great defensive showing in their last winning in a shootout. They are grouped with several other teams the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference and while their offense has not been great this season they rank sixth in the league giving up an average of 2.65 goals per game. In the first meeting between these teams at the beginning of this month, the Blue Jackets beat the Bruins 2-1 in OT.
Letting Philly Back inIn their last game, the Bruins lost to the Philadelphia Flyers 6-5 in a shootout where they let Philly back in the game after having a 5-2 lead. Boston is 0-7 in shootouts this season. David Krejci scored two goals in the losing effort and Jaroslav Halak (10-4-6 2.46 GAA) did not have a good game in goal allowing five goals on 39 shots. He has given up nine goals in his last two starts and it is likely #1 G Tuukka Rask (17-4-6 2.27 GAA), who ranks seventh in the NHL in GAA, will get the start against the Blue Jackets.
David Pastrnak ranks fourth in the league in points and tied for fifth in goals and he has six goals in his last five games. Brad Marchand ranks second on the Bruins with 20 goals but has not scored a goal in his last six games and his gaffe barley touching the puck attempting to tie the shootout in the last game cost Boston with him not even getting off a shot. Boston is 12-5-3 on the road this season and they have won four of their last five road games.
Defense has Continued to Play WellColumbus has not given up more than three goals in their last 14 games and in their last one their D was stellar beating the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0. The Blue Jackets got the win despite being outshot (27-22), three different players scored, and Kevin Stenlund got his first two career assists. Elvis Merzlikins (5-6-4 2.70 GAA) stopped all 27 shots he faced, and the Blue Jackets have won three of his last four games. #1 G Joonas Korpisalo (17-10-4 2.49 GAA) may get the call in this game and Columbus has lost his last two starts even though he only gave up two goals in each game.
Pierre-Luc Dubois and Zach Werenski are tied for the Blue Jackets’ lead with 15 goals each and Dubois, who also leads the team in points, had a goal in the win over Vegas and has five assists in his last four games. Werenski has four goals and an assist in the last five games but has not registered a point in his last two games. On the season Columbus is 12-9-2 at home.
According to the betting trends from Oddsshark.com, the Blue Jackets are:
- 10-4 in their last 14 games
- 6-1 in their last 7 games against teams from the Eastern Conference
According to the betting trends from Oddsshark.com, the Boston Bruins are:
- 4-8 in their last 12 January games
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Blue Jackets have lost six of their last nine games facing the Bruins, but they beat them in Boston 2-1 in OT earlier this month. They are at home and facing a Boston team that played last night. The Bruins have the better stats on both sides of the ice, but I see them not having the best game on offense facing a solid Columbus defense in what will be the last of their current road trip. The Blue Jackets are coming off a shutout win and have won three of their last four games. They will not light up the Boston defense, but I see them winning a low scoring game like they did facing the Bruins a few games back. Columbus will get the home W in this one with Boston losing their second game in a row.
Prediction: Blue Jackets
Full-Game Total Pick
The Blue Jackets won their last game in a 3-0 shutout while the Bruins lost their last game 6-5 in a shootout. The defense will be the key in this game between two of the better defensive teams in the league. While totaling eight goals in their last games these teams will not come close to that in this game. They totaled three goals in the lone matchup this season on January third and this game will be much like that one. Not only has the total between these teams gone Under in five of the last six meetings but the total has also gone Under in seven of the Blue Jackets last nine games. Look for those trends to continue, as this game will go Under in a very low scoring affair.
