Dallas Stars vs. Colorado Avalanche
NHL: Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 9:00 PM EST
The Stars had their six-game win streak snapped in their last game where they only scored one goal. Their defense has been great in the last couple of weeks and their D is the main reason that the club has the second-most points in the Western Conference. Dallas leads the league giving up an average of only 2.33 goals per game and their defense is key since they only rank 25th in the league in goals per game.
The Avalanche have lost three in a row and they have lost their last two games because of poor play on the defensive side of the ice. They are only one point back of the Stars in the West and they are led by an offense that ranks second in the NHL in goals per game.
Colorado has lost all three games facing the Stars this season.
Defense Keeps it Up, but Not Enough OffenseThe Stars had their win-streak end in their last game with a 2-1 road loss to the San Jose Sharks. Dallas has not allowed more than two goals in their last seven games. In the loss to the Sharks Jamie Benn scored the lone goal in the first period and Anton Khudobin (11-6-1 2.13 GAA), who ranks second in the NHL in GAA, took the loss giving up two goals on 26 shots. He or Ben Bishop (15-9-3 2.24 GAA), who ranks fourth in the league in GAA, will get the nod in against the Avs.
Only four players for the stars have scored in double figures led by Roope Hintz (15 goals) and he has two goals and three assists in his last five games. Tyler Seguin has 11 goals, leads the team in points and assists, and he has notched an assist in each of his last three games. Dallas is 11-9-2 on the road this season and they have won their last four games facing a team with a winning record.
D not there AgainIn their last game, the Avalanche were at home and lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in OT and they have allowed nine goals in their last two games. Matt Calvert scored with less than a minute remaining in regulation to tie the game in the loss to the Penguins, but they gave up the game-winning goal 3:19 into the extra period. Pavel Francouz (11-4-2 2.41 GAA) gave up four goals on 30 shots and he or Philipp Grubauer (12-10-3 2.92 GAA), who gave up four games in a loss in his last start, will be in goal against the Stars.
Nathan MacKinnon has the third-most points in the league and the third-most points has scored a goal in each of his last two games and has three goals and five assists in his last five games. Seven players have at least 11 goals for the Avs this season and while led by a solid attack in the three losses to Dallas this season they have only totaled four goals.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Two of the three games between these teams this season have been close, and I expect a pretty close game in this one. The Dallas defense has been great on the season and in their last seven games, which began with a 3-2 shootout win over Colorado, they have not allowed more than two goals. They have gotten great goaltending this season and their D will play well in this game. The Avs have not played great defense in losing two in a row but will play pretty well on that side of the ice facing a Stars’ team that is not a high scoring one. The Stars will get the win in this road game and send the Avs to their fourth straight loss.
Full-Game Total Pick
Dallas leads the league in GAA and their two goalies both rank in the top four in the NHL in GAA. They will shine on defense again in this game, which will be their eighth in a row where they will not allow more than two goals. Colorado has given up nine goals in losing their last two games but face a Dallas team that is near the bottom of the pack in terms of goals per game. In the last five meetings between these Central Division rivals the total has gone Under every time and there is no need to deviate from that trend. This will be another low scoring and close game so take the Under, as that is the smart pick.
