Playing without a breather, the New York Islanders (3rd in Metropolitan Division) will try to end a two-game losing skid while hosting the Detroit Red Wings (8th in Atlantic), who have won two of their past three outings…

Wings Snap Winning Run

The Detroit Red Wings (12-31-3) finished a three-game homestand with a 2-1-0 record after snapping a two-game winning run with a 5-1 defeat to the Buffalo Sabres at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday. Madison Bowey (3 goals, 14 points this year) buried the only snipe for the Wings, who went three goals down in the opening frame before allowing two more markers in the final third. Detroit has now split its last six contests (3-3-0) after losing six in a row prior (0-6-0). The team has posted a 4-16-2 road record so far this season.

Goalie Jimmy Howard stopped 22 shots versus Buffalo, thus going 0-10-1 in his past 11 fixtures with a 4.79 GAA and a .856 save percentage. He is 2-15-1 for the whole year thus far with a 4.10 GAA and a .880 save percentage, and has registered a 1-4-1 career total against the New York Islanders with a 2.72 GAA and a .904 save percentage. The Red Wings, meanwhile, are top of the league in least goals scored per game (2.15), top in most goals allowed on average (3.78), 27th in power play (15.2%) and bottom of the NHL in penalty kill (73.0%).

Isles Get Battered In Manhattan

The New York Islanders (27-13-4) started their current back-to-back set with a defeat, being beaten for the second straight time (0-1-1) after dropping a 6-2 decision against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden yesterday. Jordan Eberle (5 goals, 20 points this season) and Brock Nelson (16 goals, 33 points) opened and closed the scoring respectively, with the Blueshirts netting once in the opening frame, twice in the second and on three more occasions in the final third in between. The Isles have now gone 5-6-2 in their past 13 outings and are 14-5-3 when skating on home ice this year.

Goalie Semyon Varlamov (15-6-4 for the ongoing campaign with a 2.48 GAA and a .919 save percentage) gave up six goals on 35 shots after the first 50 minutes of play in Manhattan before being replaced by Thomas Greiss (12-7-0 with a 2.57 GAA and a .919 save percentage), who stopped the only shot faced. Greiss, who is set to start versus Detroit, has banked a 5-3-1 career tally against the Red Wings with a 3.05 GAA and a .886 save percentage. The Islanders, meanwhile, are 11th in least goals scored per game (2.75), 5th in least goals conceded on average (2.64), 17th in power play (19.4%) and 18th in penalty kill (79.8%).

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

The Red Wings have had more luck than the Islanders lately, winning two of their past three outings, while splitting their last six fixtures overall (3-3). The Isles, meanwhile, have posted just five wins in their previous 13 contests and are returning on home ice after two consecutive defeats. They have, however, dealt with Detroit pretty well in the recent past, beating the team from Motor City on five of the past six occasions. New York has also been quite efficient when bouncing back from heavy fiascoes, banking victories in four straight games following a defeat by a margin of at least three strikes, while the Wings have already lost 40 of their last 51 contests in the same circumstances.

Prediction: New York Islanders (-250)

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Three of the very last four outings between the Isles and the Red Wings have gone below the set goal-mark, averaging just 4.33 snipes per fixture. Is another low-scoring affair on the cards here? Well, most likely! The Red Wings are currently scoring the lowest amount of goals in the whole league anyway. Besides, four of their previous seven overall contests have already seen no more than five strikes on the scoreboard, while the very last four domestic matchups of the Islanders have all delivered just a minimal amount of markers.

Prediction: Under 5.5
