San Jose Sharks vs. Arizona Coyotes

NHL: Tuesday, January 14, Gila River Arena, Glendale, Arizona, 9:00 PM ET

After a couple of meetings in December, the San Jose Sharks and Arizona Coyotes will square off Tuesday night for the third time this season. Each team has been victorious on the road over their previous two matchups, as Arizona lost 4-2 as a -125 home fave and won 3-2 as a -115 road favorite.

The Sharks have just finished a two-game homestand, beating Columbus 3-1 and Dallas 2-1 in the process. They will start a three-game road trip on Tuesday, and the Sharks have dropped their previous two contests away from home. On the other side, the Coyotes are riding a three-game losing streak following a shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins and will hit the road after Tuesday’s clash against San Jose.

Brent Burns used his skate to score, the Sharks outlasted the Stars as home dogs

San Jose is coming off a 2-1 victory to the Dallas Stars this past Saturday. The Stars took the lead just 1:32 into the first period, but 14 minutes later, Brent Burns used his left skate to tie the game. Patrick Marleau netted his ninth goal of the season early in the second period, and the Sharks defended well for the rest of the game to record their fourth win over the last six outings. Aaron Dell had 27 stops with a .964 save percentage, tallying his second straight win and fourth over his last five starts.

Dell has guarded the cage in five of the Sharks’ previous six games. He’s 8-7-2 this season and has a 2.77 GAA and a .910 save percentage. Martin Jones has been the first option between the pipes for most of the season, but he’s only 13-15-2 with a 3.19 GAA and a .890 save percentage. Also, Jones has lost eight of his previous nine starts. The Sharks are tied-23rd in the league in goals per game (3.23), but they’ve allowed just 17 goals over the last eight contests. Interestingly, the Sharks’ penalty-killing percentage is the best in the NHL by far (88.2%).

On the other side, the Sharks are 26th in the league in goals scored per game (2.64) and 25th in power-play conversion (16.7%). Center Logan Couture (G14, A22) leads the way for the Sharks, but he sustained a fractured ankle last week and will be sidelined for at least six weeks. Another center Tomas Hertl (G15, A20) has recorded four assists over his previous five outings, but he’s scored only one goal in his last 11 games.

The Coyotes blew their lead late in the third and lost to Pittsburgh in a shootout

Arizona is coming off a 4-3 shootout defeat to the Pittsburgh Penguins this past Sunday. The Coyotes had a 3-2 lead with just three minutes left on the clock in the third period when they allowed the Penguins to tie the game. Taylor Hall scored for Arizona in a shootout, but Adin Hill conceded twice and the Coyotes extended their skid to three games. Also, the Coyotes put an end to a three-game win streak on the home ice.

Adin Hill got his third starting nod of the season Sunday night and suffered his second straight loss. He had a good game with 31 saves on 34 shots, while Hill has a 2.52 GAA and a .921 save percentage over his three starts. The Coyotes have some serious injury worries, as their first two goaltenders are sidelined. Darcy Kuemper won’t return until the All-Star break, while Antti Raanta is doubtful to play against the Sharks.

The Coyotes are one of the best defensive teams in the league. They are third in the league in goals against (2.54) and seventh in penalty killing (82.8%). Also, Arizona’s goalies are tied with the Bruins for the second-best save percentage in the NHL (.921). On the other side, the Coyotes are 22nd in the league in goals scored per game (2.73) and 15th in power-play conversion (19.7%). Centers Nick Schmaltz (G7, A28) and Clayton Keller (G12, A20) are the only two players with 30-plus points this season.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

At this moment, it’s unknown if Antti Raanta is ready to return between the pipes. If he remains on the sidelines, Adin Hill will get another start for the Coyotes. Although Hill was solid in his first three outings, I would feel much more comfortable if Raanta guards the cage. I like the Coyotes spot here. They have to stop a three-game losing streak, and the clash against the Sharks seems like a perfect opportunity. The Sharks have been struggling offensively all season, so I would lean on the Coyotes’ defense to shut them down. Also, the Sharks will have to regress a bit after some terrific defensive displays in the last two weeks.

Prediction: Arizona Coyotes (-130)

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

As I’ve mentioned above, both San Jose and Arizona are pretty inefficient this season. The Coyotes are a great defensive team, while the Sharks have improved a lot on the defensive end recently. Six of the Sharks’ last seven games went in the under, as well as six of their previous seven contests on the road. On the other side, the under is 12-6 in Arizona’s last 18 meetings with the Pacific Division. Furthermore, both teams are excellent in penalty killing, so I don’t expect to see a high-scoring affair. Considering the stats and teams’ form, we should see no more than five goals in the total.

Prediction: Under 5.5 goals (-125)
