Vancouver Canucks vs. Winnipeg Jets
NHL: Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 8:00 PM EST
After losing two in a row where their defense was terrible the Canucks have rebounded and won their last two games. In the two wins, they played well on both sides of the ice and the team sits tied for sixth place in the Western Conference. The offense has been there for the season for Vancouver and while the defense has been the issue they only gave up one goal in their last game.
The Jets are just the opposite of the Canucks in that they had won two in a row before losing their last two games. Winnipeg is only two games back of Vancouver in the West and while they have had a solid attack on the season they were shut out in their last game. In the lone game between these teams, this season in Winnipeg the Jets beat the Canucks 4-1.
The Same Team? After losing two in a row being outscored 14-2, including giving up a season-high nine goals in a game, the Canucks have won their last two games by a combined score of 10-4. In their last game, they were on the road and beat the Minnesota Wild 4-1. In the game the Canucks outscored the Wild 3-0 after the game was tied at 1-1, Bo Horvat had two goals, and Jacob Markstrom (17-12-3 GAA) stopped 23 of 24 shots. He has been in goal for the last two games giving up four goals and he or backup Thatcher Demko (8-5-1 3.20 GAA), who gave up five goals in his last start in a loss, will get the start against the Jets.
Elias Pettersson leads a Canucks team that has four players with at least 15 goals with 21 goals and he scored in the win over the Wild and has two goals and two assists in his last four games.
J.T. Miller has 16 goals on the season and leads the club in assists and he had two assists in the win over Minnesota. Vancouver is 11-12-1 on the road this season and their last two games have been on the road.
Good D No OThe Jets were at home in their last game and lost their second in a row in a 1-0 loss to the Nashville Predators. They were outshot 32-28, gave up the lone goal in the first period, and Connor Hellebuyck (20-13-4 2.64 GAA) took the tough loss stopping 31 of 32 shots. He had given up five goals in the Canucks winning his last two starts and would think he would get the start in this game over Laurent Brossoit (4-5-0 3.65 GAA), as he did not get the call in the game before the loss to the Preds.
Mark Scheifele and Kyle Conner are tied for the Jets lead with 22 goals each and Scheifele also leads the team in points and assists. Scheifele had scored a goal in two straight games before failing to score in the last one and has three goals and two assists in his last five games. Conner has one goal and three assists in his last five games and Winnipeg has five players that have scored at least 14 goals. This season the Jets are 10-10-2 at home.
According to the betting trends from Oddsshark.com, the Winnipeg Jets are:
- 3-7 in their last 10 games
- 0-6 in their last 6 home games
According to the betting trends from Oddsshark.com, the Vancouver Canucks are:
- 9-2 in their last 11 games
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Canucks have had no success against the Jets in the last few seasons losing their last nine games facing them. However, they are hot winners of nine of 11 games and the Jets are not and have dropped their last six home games. Vancouver has scored 10 goals in their last two games and the Jets were shut out in their last game. I don’t see the Canucks scoring many goals in this game but they will have a solid contest on both sides of the ice. Winnipeg will not have a good game on the attack for the second straight game. I see a lower scoring game in this one and one where the Canucks pick up the road win and snap their long losing streak against the Jets.
Full-Game Total Pick
The Canucks’ offense has been great in the last two games, but I see them cooling down on that side of the ice against a Jets’ team that only gave up one goal in their last game. In four of the last five games between these Western Conference rivals the total has gone Under and that is a trend that will continue. The Canucks are the overall pick, as they will have some offense while the same cannot be said for the Jets, who were shut out in their last game. They may not be shut out again, but they will not score a slew of goals. The Under is the pick in this game in what will be far from a barnburner.
