San Jose Sharks vs. Chicago Blackhawks
NHL: October 10, 2019 at 8:30 PM EST
To say the Sharks have gotten off to a bad start this season would be a major understatement. They have lost their first four games and they have struggled on both sides of the ice. San Jose has been outscored 17-5 and their highest-scoring game was their last one where they “lit it up” for two goals. San Jose’s bad start is after a preseason where they won one of just six games.
While the Sharks have played four games the Blackhawks have only played one game where they lost across the pond in Prague. They lost that game giving up four goals and their defense was the issue last season ranking 2nd worst in the league giving up 3.55 goals per game. They have missed the playoffs for two straight seasons and star Patrick Kane and the veteran laden team looks to change that.
Another bad defensive gameIn their last game, the Sharks stayed winless on the young season with a bad defensive one losing to the Nashville Predators 5-2. They were only down 2-1 entering the 3rd period, but their D fell apart being outscored 3-1. Evander Kane and Brett Burns, who also had an assist, both scored for San Jose. Martin Jones took another loss giving up four goals on only 24 shots and while he has been consistent in his three starts this season, he has been consistently bad giving up four goals in each start.
The offense for the Sharks has been stagnant all season and through four games no player has more than one goal. Joe Pavelski led the team in goals last season and is now with the Dallas Stars and Tomas Hertl ranked 2nd on the team in goals and has yet to register a point this season. This is San Jose’s 4th road game in their first five games of the season.
Can’t come backIn their opening game of the season in Prague, the Blackhawks lost to the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 where they were constantly down in the 2nd and 3rd periods but could not come back. They had 31 shots and allowed the Flyers to have 38 and they were killed on faceoffs. Alex DeBrincat scored on a power play and Alexander Nylander and PatrickKane, who had two assists, also found the back of the net. Corey Crawford (0-1-0) did not have the best debut on the season giving up four goals on 38 shots.
The defense was the main issue for Chicago last season, but the team made some moves to shore up the blue line and signed 2019 Vezina Trophy finalist Robin Lehner to be the backup goalie. Even in the loss, the good news for Chicago was Kane still looks like a star and the 8th pick in the 2016 draft Nylander scored a goal and is looking like a player that could be a fixture for the Blackhawks’ top two lines.

Last season Chicago split their two games facing San Jose with each team winning on the road.
The Chicago Blackhawks are:
- 4-1 in their last 5 Thursday games
- 7-1 in their last 8 games as a home favorite of -110 to -150
- 7-3 in their last 10 games as a home favorite
The San Jose Sharks are:
- 8-20 in their last 28 overall
- 6-22 in their last 28 games as an underdog
- 0-5 in their last 5 road games
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
A couple of winless teams face off in the Windy City in this game and the Blackhawks are making their first appearance on this side of the pond. The Sharks will get a win sometime, but that time will not be in this road game. Chicago will play well in their first home game of the season and will get the W to even their record and send San Jose to their 5th straight loss to start the season.
Prediction: PICK Blackhawks
Full-Game Total Pick
Most of the games for the Sharks so far on the season have been Over because of their bad defense. The Blackhawks lone game went Over because of their poor defense as well. With both teams giving up goals do not look for a defensive matchup in this game in Chicago. Goals will be aplenty, especially for Chicago, so take the Over in this Western Conference encounter.
Prediction: PICK Over
