We have a non-conference NHL game to consider for Monday night when the Vegas Golden Knights meet the Philadelphia Flyers for the first of a two-game season series. Vegas represents the Western Conference Pacific Division and is 6-3-0 with 12 points and Philadephia is part of the Eastern Conference Metropolitan Division and is 2-3-1 with five points this season.
Vegas Two Game Winning StreakVegas has won four of its last five and enter this game riding a two-game winning streak and this is game-two of their three-game scheduled road trip and they will want to defeat the Flyers Monday night and go on to Chicago and beat the Blackhawks Tuesday night. The Golden Knights got their three-game road trip started the right way with a shutout victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. M.A. Fleury stopped all 29 shots he faced and William Carlsson, Paul Stastny, and Mark Stone added single tallies for Vegas.
🎥 Coach Gallant: I thought it was our best game of the year... Guys stepped up and they battled for their goalie tonight. And their goalie's outstanding. pic.twitter.com/U3ssmbiqse— Vegas Golden Knights (@GoldenKnights) October 20, 2019
The Vegas special teams have been on point this season; the 30 percent success rate on the power play is fifth-best in the NHL and their 94.3 percent success rate killing penalties is tops in the National Hockey League.
Fleury is the man most likely to patrol the cage Monday night and he’s posted a 6-2-0 record with one shutout and a GAA of 2.18. Surprisingly, Corsica Hockey doesn’t seem that high on his 92.9 xSV% and his GSAA of -3.72 is one of the worst in the NHL this season. He’s won two straight and is looking for his third against a Flyers offense scoring just 11 goals over their last five games.
Flyers Four Game Losing StreakPhiladelphia has dropped four consecutive games and looks to be headed nowhere fast and if they don’t get their act together, they may miss the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season. They’ll have a couple of days off between their game with Vegas and their Thursday night matchup at Chicago to figure things out but first up is a red-hot Vegas team and despite the under .500 record, the Flyers are best in the NHL at five by five Goals Expected so maybe their recent scoring troubles are just a slump and not a trend.
The Flyers power-play unit boasts a 25 percent success rate and that’s a good number but their penalty kill unit has struggled with a 73.3 percent success rate and that isn’t good against a team like Vegas.
Carter Hart is the likely probable starting goaltender for Philadelphia and his 2-2-1 record includes one shutout to his credit and a solid 2.59 GAA. Corsica Hockey lists Hart with a 92.39 xSV% and a below-average -0.29 GSAA and those numbers reflect his performances in a five by five sets. He’s up against it with a Vegas offense that has generated 19 goals over its last five games.
- Flyers are 0-7 in their last 7 games as an underdog.
- Flyers are 0-4 in their last 4 games playing on 1 days rest.
- Flyers are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. Western Conference.
- Golden Knights are 4-0 in their last 4 overall.
- Golden Knights are 4-0 in their last 4 games as a favorite.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Philadelphia might have good advanced offensive stats but they haven't been demonstrating this over their past four games and they will have trouble against Vegas. Especially against the Vegas special teams and any penalty situation will favor Vegas and that doesn't bode well for the Flyers ending their four-game losing streak.
I'm playing Vegas to win this game.
Full-Game Total Pick
I don't see many goals being scored. Vegas has the best penalty kill unit in hockey and on the road that is a good thing and will help keep the Flyers off the scoreboard. Fleury has been strong and maybe the advanced stats aren't a fan, he's been stopping pucks and getting wins and I look for both to continue in this contest. Hart is better than his numbers and maybe Vegas scores a trio of goals with the Flyers probable scoring two.
I will play the UNDER in this contest.
