San Jose Sharks vs. Dallas Stars

NHL: Thursday, November 8, 2018, American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas, 8:30 PM ET

The Western Conference showdown between the San Jose Sharks (8-4-3) and the Dallas Stars (8-6-1) is set for Thursday night in Dallas and should be a pure joy to watch. The Sharks are currently topping the Pacific Division, while the Stars are 3rd in the Central Division and two points behind the Sharks on the Western Conference table.

The Sharks are searching for their third win in a row

After four consecutive games at home, the San Jose Sharks will hit the road to meet the Dallas Stars for the first time this season, and the Sharks are 4-2-2 in their eight outings away from home in this term. They have won two games in a row beating the Minnesota Wild 4-3 and the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in the overtime thanks to their best goalscorer Timo Meier who has netted 11 times this season, as Meier hit the winner just 13 seconds into the overtime.

Goalie Martin Jones is the first choice for the Sharks, and he has a 7-3-1 record this season with 2.72 GAA and .899 save percentage, while his backup Aaron Dell has a 1-1-2 record with 2.71 GAA and .913 save percentage. While Timo Meier has 16 points on his account (11 goals and 6 assists), the defender Brent Burns is leading the Sharks with 15 assists, adding three goals to his name. The Sharks are 10th in the league in goals per game (3.3) and 13th in goals against (2.9), while their penalty kill percentage is the 3rd-best in the league (86.5).

It’s good to come back home

The Dallas Stars are back from their six-game road trip where they’ve recorded three wins and three losses, but the Stars were beaten in the previous two games against the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 and the Boston Bruins 2-1 in the overtime. In seven games at home so far, the Dallas Stars have recorded five wins and a couple of losses, interestingly, without playing a single overtime. In their last home game versus the Anaheim Ducks, the Stars have earned a comfortable 5-2 victory.

Goalie Ben Bishop should be starting on this one, and he has a 6-5 record this season with 2.40 GAA and .921 save percentage, while his backup Anton Khudobin has a 2-1-1 record with 2.22 GAA and .929 save percentage. The center Tyler Seguin is leading the way for the Stars with three goals and 11 assists, while the winger Jamie Benn has seven goals and five assists on his account. Dallas is 23rd in the league in goals per game (2.8) and 5th in goals against (2.7), whilst their power play percentage is 11th-best in the NHL (24.4).

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

Dallas has won four out of the last five meetings with San Jose, and the Stars have beaten the Sharks four times in a row at American Airlines Center, while they are 7-3 in the previous ten duels against San Jose. Dallas hammered the Sharks in the last two meetings at home (6-0 and 6-1), and the home team is 7-2 in the previous nine games, so I’ll take the Stars here.

Prediction: Dallas Stars (+110)

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Dallas has a 27:18 goal difference in seven games at home which is exactly five goals per contest, while San Jose has a 27:25 goal difference in eight games on the road which is 6.5 goals per contest. It’s no secret that these two teams prefer different styles of play, so this is a tough wager. However, five of Dallas’ seven home games had at least six goals in total, while four of San Jose’s last five games had at least six goals on the scoreboard, so I have to go with the over.

Prediction: Over 5.5 goals (-115)

Full-Game Prop Bet
Rating:

The Sharks have scored first in 12 of their 15 outings so far, bagging 19 1st-period goals and conceding 10 in a return which is 1.93 goals on average, while six of their eight road games saw more than a goal in the first 20 minutes. On the other side, four of Dallas’ seven home games saw at least two 1st-period goals, but Dallas has a 11:8 1st-period goal difference which is only 1.27 goals on average, while in general, the Stars have scored first in 11 of their 15 outings on the season. Hereof, I think we could see some goals in the first 20 minutes.

Prediction: Dallas Stars (+185)
