Playing the second outing of a back-to-back stretch, the Vancouver Canucks (6th in Pacific Division) are stopping by the Chicago Blackhawks (7th in Central), who have won five contests in a row…

No Breather For The ‘Nucks

The Vancouver Canucks (29-32-10) will not get much rest in the coming days, embarking on a back-to-back road stretch to see off the Dallas Stars (on Sunday) and the Chicago Blackhawks (just 25-and-a-half hours later). Entering the set, the ‘Nucks had lost three of their previous four outings (1-2-1) and were 2-4-2 in their last eight fixtures, sitting 6th in the Pacific Division with 68 points from 71 contests, 10 points adrift of the playoff crowd of the Western Conference. Elias Pettersson was leading the team with 27 goals and 59 points.

Coming into the double-header, goalie Jacob Markstrom had picked up a 25-20-9 total for the rolling year with a 2.73 GAA and a .913 save percentage, while back-up Thatcher Demko was 1-2-0 on the year with a 3.21 GAA and a .895 save percentage. Demko has never faced Chicago before, while Markstrom has posted a 4-0-4 career total against the Blackhawks with a 2.46 GAA and a .921 save percentage. Prior to Sunday, the Canucks were 6th in least goals scored per game (2.68), 14th in most goals allowed on average (3.04), 27th in power play (15.0%) and 16th in penalty kill (80.8%).

Blackhawks Win Fifth In Row

The Chicago Blackhawks (32-30-9) continued to pile up victories, winning their fifth straight game after shutting out the Montreal Canadiens with a score of 2-0 at Bell Centre on Saturday. Connor Murphy (4 goals, 12 points this year) and Brendan Perlini (13 goals, 20 points) both found the back of the net for the ‘Hawks, whose current streak was preceded by just a single win in five outings prior (1-4-0). The team is 7th in the Central Division with 73 points from 71 matchups, trailing a playoff place in the Western Conference by five points.

Goalie Corey Crawford stopped 48 shots for his second shutout of the year and 25th of his NHL career. He is 12-15-2 for the season with a 3.07 GAA and a .907 save percentage, and has recorded an 8-5-3 past tally against the Vancouver Canucks with a 2.57 GAA and a .912 save percentage. The Blackhawks, meanwhile, are scoring the 8th highest quantity of goals per game (3.37), while conceding the absolute highest amount in their defensive zone (3.65). They are 11th in power play with a 20.8% success rate and bottom of the league in penalty kill with 73.5% effectiveness.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

Even though the Canucks have won five of their last six meetings with Chicago, their chances of beating the in-form Blackhawks in this particular fixture are slim. First of all, they are playing with no rest, having already lost 13 of their last 16 outings contested on the second night of a back-to-back stretch. The ‘Nucks have also struggled on their travels to see off teams with a losing home record, dropping six of the previous seven decisions. Chicago, on the other hand, has already won five straight contests and is an impressive 10-2 in its past 12 against teams with a poor form.

Prediction: Chicago Blackhawks

Full-Game Total Pick

The very last eight encounters between the pair have all seen at least six snipes on the scoreboard. So, don’t expect anything less from this contest. Four of the previous five matchups of the Canucks, contested on the last day of a 3-games-in-4-days scenario, have already produced plenty of strikes, while 41 of the last 51 overall games of the Blackhawks have all witnessed at least six goals netted.

Prediction: Over 5.5
