Richardson Hitchins vs George Kambosos Betting Analysis

Newly-crowned IBF light-welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins is due the first defense of his title on Saturday against former 135lb unified champion George Kambosos over in New York.

Hitchins is undefeated across his career to date, arguably putting in the performance of his career so far in his last fight against Liam Paro, one of the most straightforward split decisions you’re ever likely to see, with the one judge who scored it for Paro (an unbelievable 117-111 card), being rightly described as “absurd”.

In terms of this fight, Hitchins comes in as the massive -1200 favorite this weekend, with George Kambosos coming back as a +700 underdog

Hitchins Just One Of Many High-Level Contenders At 140

Arguably fighting in one of the most loaded divisions in all of boxing, Richardson Hitchins, despite his champion status, will need to go on quite some run to become the main man in the 140lb division.

In fact the division has become so loaded recently that fighters such as Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia have opted to move up in weight, leaving the other champions in the division, Gary Antuanne Russell, Alberto Puello, Teofimo Lopez, as well as the aforementioned Richardson Hitchins, with plenty left to do in order to unify.

With solid contenders on the fringe also in fighters such as Arnold Barboza, Liam Paro, Sandor Martin, Jack Catterall, and Regis Prograis, among a host of others, it’ll be extremely interesting to see how the light-welterweight title picture shakes out over the next 18 months.

Seismic Fall For The Former Emperor

Often dubbed ‘The Emperor’ by his legion of fans, George Kambosos is chiefly responsible for the boxing renaissance going on in Australia right now, with his win over Teofimo Lopez back in 2021 catapulting the Greek-Australian fighter into the limelight.

Since then however, it’s been a seismic fall for ‘Ferocious’, losing to Devin Haney twice across two one-sided contests, getting extremely fortunate in a majority-decision win over England’s Maxi Hughes also, a fight many observers, including myself, thought he lost, and then getting completely undressed by the legendary Vasiliy Lomachenko in the final fight of the great Ukrainian’s career.

A lackluster win over Jake Wylie in his last fight has done little to restore public confidence in Kambosos either, and he will need to find that magic Teofimo Lopez formula if he’s going to be competitive in this fight.

Richardson Hitchins vs George Kambosos Expert Prediction

It’s very difficult to make a case for George Kambosos ahead of this fight given everything we know.

Not only has Kambosos arguably lost four of his last five fights (at least by the eye test), he just hasn’t looked like the same fighter since he secured that victory over Teofimo Lopez a few years ago, with his meteoric rise, headlining stadiums in his native Australia, likely being detrimental to the hunger he showed as a road warrior earlier in his career.

However, the main factor we struggle to see Kambosos having success in this fight is the styles of both men, with Teofimo’s engagement in the pocket providing Kambosos with numerous countering opportunities in their fight that he just couldn’t get across 24 rounds with Devin Haney, with Haney’s piston-like jab keeping Kambosos quiet for the full two fights.

Richardson Hitchins arguably has even better jab than Haney does, although it isn’t quite as mobile. Hitchins is also extremely effective at utilizing his jab as well, with 12 of his 19 wins coming by decision.

There have been aggressive fighters in the past such as Gustavo Lemos who have managed to get past Hitchin’s jab by fighting low, and giving him some huge problems on the inside as a result, but Kambosos’ smaller frame, plus the fact he hasn’t shown that level of aggression for years at this point, doesn’t lead us to believe he’ll be able to replicate that style.

Overall, this really comes down to whether or not Hitchins can stop Kambosos in this one or not. Hitchins is on a run of four straight decision victories heading into this fight, while Kambosos got stopped for the first time in his career against Vasiliy Lomachenko last year, a stoppage that came late on in the 11th round.

While Hitchins has a chance at a stoppage here, and early money has certainly come in on that side of the play, we have to side with history and form in this one, and take Richardon Hitchins to win on points this weekend.

Richardson Hitchins vs George Kambosos Prediction: Richardson Hitchins by Dec/Tech Dec (-195)
