New York Mets
The Mets’ pitching staff will welcome the return of Kodai Senga with open arms, but this is still going to be a tough task after missing the last month with a hamstring injury.
New York is coming off a doubleheader loss to the Orioles on Thursday where the Mets’ bullpen was responsible for both losses. Ryne Stanek allowed four walks and a two-run home run in the eighth inning of Game 1, then Justin Hagenman allowed three runs in 2.0 innings in relief of Brandon Waddell in Game 2.
Mets’ beat writer Anthony DiComo said that Senga is not expected to be on any kind of restriction on Friday, but he only threw 68 pitches in a Double-A rehab assignment on Saturday.
Senga was fantastic prior to his injury, but it’s fair to take a second look back at the list of opponents that he has faced thus far. In his 13 starts this season, Senga has faced the Marlins twice, the Nationals twice and the Rockies twice, plus solo dates against the Pirates and Athletics. He’s only faced three teams that currently have a winning record.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said he wasn’t expecting to get Senga back before the All-Star break, so we’re expecting them to handle him carefully in his first start off the IL.
With pitching being a major question mark, the Mets just need to keep winning slugfests if they want to stay within reach of the Phillies in the NL East. New York has a .329 weighted on-base average against right-hand pitching this season (No. 5 in MLB) with a 116 wRC+ (No. 5).
Kansas City Royals
The Royals’ offense has struggled all year, but they are slowly finding a power surge in the month of July. Kansas City has scored at least four runs in five of its last six games. In those six games, the Royals have hit 14 home runs.
After a dreadful start at the plate, superstar prospect Jac Caglianone has hit home runs in back-to-back games.
Michael Wacha has pitched well for the Royals this season, but he has struggled with his command in recent starts. Wacha has an ERA near 6.00 since the beginning of June, and over his last two starts, he has more walks (six) than strikeouts (five). His 18.4-percent strikeout rate is the lowest of his career.

Royals vs Mets Prediction
It’s a relatively-small sample size, but the Mets’ lineup has performed very well against Wacha in the past. The Mets’ current roster is hitting .417 in 51 plate appearances against Wacha with a .429 weighted on-base average. Pete Alonso is 3-for-6 with a home run. Juan Soto is 4-for-9 with a double. Brett Baty is 2-for-3 with a double.
