NFC North
Dallas Cowboys:
Key Additions: WR Brandin Cooks (Trade-Texans), OT Chuma Edoga (FA-Falcons), CB Stephon Gilmore (Trade-Colts), RB Ronald Jones (FA-Bucs),
Key Subtractions: WR Noah Brown (FA-Texans), RB Ezekiel Elliott, LB Luke Gifford (FA-Titans), G Connor McGovern (FA-Bills), TE Dalton Schultz (FA-Texans), DE Carlos Watkins (FA-Cardinals).
Off-season Analysis: The addition of Cooks helps the vertical passing game. He showed last season with Houston that he still has something left in the tank. Gilmore should help the secondary, though he’s not the player he once was. Due to cap issues, Dallas was forced to get rid of Schultz. Ronald Jones was not a bad pickup considering they decided to move on from Elliott.
New York Giants:
Key Additions: WR Parris Campbell (FA-Colts), WR Jamison Crowder (FA-Bills), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (FA-Bucs), LB Bobby Okereke (FA-Colts), CB Amani Oruwariye (FA-Lions), DE A’Shawn Robinson (FA-Rams), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (FA-Giants, TE Darren Waller (Trade-Raiders).
Key Subtractions: OL Jon Feliciano (FA-49ers), OL Nick Gates (FA-Commanders), S Julian Love (FA-Seahawks).
Off-season Analysis: The biggest move for the Giants was keeping Daniel Jones. He should be thrilled that they added Waller, assuming he can stay healthy. They were able to add Campbell and re-signed Darius Slayton to help the receiving corps. Saquon Barkley is also back and ready to go with a one-year deal. He’s a big back with great speed and would be tough to replace. But next season, he could be headed elsewhere.
Philadelphia Eagles:
Key Additions: S Terrell Edmunds (FA-Steelers), S Justin Evans (FA-Saints), QB Marcus Mariota (FA-Falcons), WR Zach Pascal (FA-Cardinals), RB Rashaad Penny (FA-Seahawks), RB D’Andre Swift (Trade-Lions), CB Greedy Williams (FA-Browns).
Key Subtractions: OT Andre Dillard (FA-Titans), LB T.J. Edwards (FA-Bears), S Marcus Epps (FA-Raiders), S C.J. Gardner-Johnson (FA-Lions), DT Javon Hargrave (FA-49ers), QB Gardner Minshew (FA-Colts), WR Zach Pascal (FA-Cardinals), RB Miles Sanders (FA-Panthers), OG Isaac Seumalo (FA-Steelers), WR Kyzir White (FA-Cardinals).
Off-season Analysis: The Eagles lost a lot in the off-season including Hargrave, Gardner-Johnson, Epps, and White. But they re-signed some key players like Darius Slay and James Bradberry along with extending QB Jalen Hurts. Edmunds was a strong pickup at safety and a must-have. Swift could be a star in this offense if he can stay healthy.
Washington Commanders:
Key Additions: LB Cody Barton (FA-Seahawks), QB Jacoby Brissett (FA-Browns), OG Nick Gates (FA-Giants), OG Trenton Scott (FA-Steelers), RT Andrew Wylie (FA-Chiefs).
Key Subtractions: QB Taylor Heinicke (FA-Falcons), LB Cole Holcomb (FA-Steelers), OG Wes Schweitzer (FA-Jets), QB Carson Wentz (FA).
Off-season Analysis: Their biggest move was getting rid of owner Daniel Snyder and adding Josh Harris. Washington has needed a QB since RGIII and Kirk Cousins were battling it out. Brissett isn’t the long-term answer but will battle it out with Sam Howell for the starting job. Wylie and Gates are solid additions to an offensive line that gave up 48 sacks last season. Another big addition was the fact that they were able to bring over OC Eric Bieniemy from Kansas City and he could take over the head coaching job if Ron Rivera gets off to a bad start.
NFC North
Chicago Bears:
Key Additions: OG Nate Davis (FA-Titans), LB Tremaine Edmunds (FA-Bills), LB T.J. Edwards (FA-Eagles), DE Raheem Green (FA-Texans), WR D.J. Moore (Trade-Panthers), DE DeMarcus Walker (FA-Bears), QB Phillip Walker (FA-Panthers.
Key Subtractions: RB David Montgomery (FA-Lions). OT Riley Reiff (FA-Patriots), QB Trevor Siemian (FA-Bengals).
Off-season Analysis: The biggest move for the Bears was trading the top pick in the draft to Carolina for Moore and then trading down again to get the 10th pick. They focused on offensive line help to protect Justin Field, who now has a number one receiver in Moore and a left tackle in rookie Darnell Wright. Edmunds and Edwards should help improve a defense that allowed a pitiful 27.2 points per game.
Detroit Lions:
Key Additions: G Graham Glasgow (FA-Broncos), S C.J. Gardner-Johnson (FA-Eagles), WR Marvin Jones Jr. (FA-Jaguars), RB David Montgomery (FA-Bears), CB Cameron Sutton (FA-Steelers)
Key Subtractions: WR D.J. Chark (FA-Panthers), CB Mike Hughes (FA-Falcons), RB D’Andre Swift (Trade-Eagles), DB Jeff Okudah (Trade-Falcons), RB Jamaal Williams (FA-Saints)
Off-season Analysis: The Lions brought back Glasgow, who played with the Lions as a four-year starter before leaving in 2020. They got rid of Jeff Okudah and D’Andre Swift, former high draft picks. They didn’t need Swift if they had Jamaal Williams, but they also got rid of him and picked up David Montgomery, who is not an upgrade. Safety Gardner-Johnson and Sutton will help a pass defense that ranked near the bottom of the league in yards allowed and yards per attempt allowed.
Green Bay Packers:
Key Additions: FS Adrian Amos (FA-Jets), S Tarvarius Moore (FA-49ers).
Key Subtractions: WR Randall Cobb (FA-Jets), WR Allen Lazard (FA-Jets), DE Dean Lowry (FA-Vikings). DE Jarran Reed (FA-Seahawks), QB Aaron Rodgers (Trade-Jets), TE Robert Tonyan (FA-Bears).
Off-season Analysis: The Packers are a rare team that spends very little in free agency. The Jordan Love era has begun with Rodgers off to the Jets along with Lazard and Cobb. They also lost Tonyan to the Bears but added Luke Musgrave in the second round from Oregon State and Tucker Kraft from South Dakota State in the third round.
Minnesota Vikings:
Key Additions: DE Marcus Davenport (FA-Saints), CB Byron Murphy (FA-Cardinals), TE Josh Oliver (FA-Ravens).
Key Subtractions: RB Dalvin Cook (FA), LB Eric Kendricks (FA-Chargers), CB Patrick Peterson (FA-Steelers), WR Adam Thielen (FA-Panthers), DT Dalvin Tomlinson (FA-Browns).
Off-season Analysis: The NFC North is now wide open with Aaron Rodgers gone and the Vikes have kept most of their key players. But this is a big season for everyone, including Kirk Cousins, who needs to get the team far. The key acquisition will be first-round WR Jordan Addison, who should produce right away next to Justin Jefferson. CB Byron Murphy was a solid pickup and he should start along with Davenport at defensive end. But with Peterson and Cameron Dantzler gone, the additions of Murphy and rookie Mekhi Blackmon might not be enough to address a weakness.
NFC South
Atlanta Falcons
Key Additions: S Jessie Bates III (FA-Bengals), DE Calais Campbell (FA-Falcons), OLB Bud Dupree (FA-Titans), CB Tre Flowers (FA-Bengals), OLB Kaden Elliss (FA-Saints). QB Taylor Heinicke (FA-Commanders), CB Mike Hughes (FA-Lions), WR Mack Hollins (FA-Raiders), CB Mike Hughes (F-Lions), DB Jeff Okudah (Trade-Lions), DT David Onyemata (FA-Saints),
Key Subtractions: CB Isaiah Oliver (FA-49ers), QB Marcus Mariota (FA-Eagles),
Off-season Analysis: It was a busy off-season for the Falcons, but they have an issue at quarterback. Is Desmond Ridder the answer? The only veteran they brought in to compete with him is Taylor Heinicke, who is more of a competent backup. They really needed to bolster the pass rush and the hope is that Bud Dupree can turn the clock at 30. Bates was a good signing who is strong in run support.
Carolina Panthers:
Key Additions: S Vonn Bell (FA-Bengals), WR D.J. Chark (FA-Lions), QB Andy Dalton (FA-Saints), TE Hayden Hurst (FA-Panthers), RB Miles Sanders (FA-Eagles), WR Adam Thielen (FA-Vikings), DT Shy Tuttle (FA-Saints).
Key Subtractions: QB Sam Darnold (FA-49ers), RB D’Onta Foreman (FA-Bears), LB Cory Littleton (FA-Texans), WR D.J. Moore (Trade-Bears).
Off-season Analysis: The biggest move was the drafting of Bryce Young and the Panthers moved up to take him No. 1 by sending Moore to the Bears. They lost Moore but signed Chark and Thielen. Neither are No. 1 receivers though second-round pick Jonathan Mingo from Ole Miss has a chance to be one.
New Orleans Saints:
Key Additions: QB Derek Carr (FA-Raiders), TE Foster Moreau (FA-Raiders), WR Deonte Harty (FA-Bills), DT Khalen Saunders (FA-Chiefs), DE Nathan Shepherd (FA-Jets), OG Trai Turner (FA-Commanders), RB Jamaal Williams (FA-Lions),
Key Subtractions: QB Andy Dalton (FA-Panthers), DE Marcus Davenport (FA-Vikings), S Justin Evans (FA-Eagles, LB Keith Elliss (FA-Falcons), WR Deonte Harty (FA-Bills), DT David Onyemata (FA-Falcons), TE Adam Trautman (Trade-Broncos)., DT Shy Tuttle (FA-Panthers).
Off-season Analysis: The addition of Carr should boost the offense some, though Carr appears to be on a downward trend at age 32. The better pickup might be Jamaal Williams, who became a touchdown machine in Detroit. The Saints had huge cap issues so it was a bit of a surprise that they signed Carr to a four-year, $150 million deal. They had to let go of key players like Davenport, Elliss, and Justin Evans.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
Key Additions: RB Chase Edmonds (FA-Broncos), DT Greg Gaines (FA-Rams), QB Baker Mayfield (FA-Rams), K Chase McLaughlin (FA-Colts), S Ryan Neal (FA-Seahawks),
Key Subtractions: QB Tom Brady (retirement), CB Sean Murphy-Bunting (FA-Titans), G Shaq Mason (Trade-Texans), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (FA-Giants), OT Donovan Smith (FA-Chiefs).
Off-season Analysis: The Tom Brady is over and it was a short one, but they did win a Super Bowl. Now, it’s time to rebuild with Mayfield likely taking over at quarterback. That means they should be drafting high next season and will look to draft one of the elite talents in 2024. New OC Dave Canales will hope to rejuvenate Mayfield’s career as he did with Geno Smith in Seattle. As long as the Bucs can protect him with Mason and Donovan Smith gone, he should have a solid season with a strong group of receivers.
NFC West
Arizona Cardinals:
Key Additions: C Hjalte Froholdt (FA-Browns), WR Zach Pascal (FA-Eagles), DE Carlos Watkins (FA-Cowboys), OLB Kyzir White (FA-Eagles).
Key Subtractions: DE Zach Allen (FA-Broncos), WR DeAndre Hopkins (FA-Titans), CB Byron Murphy (FA-Vikings), DE J.J. Watt (retired).
Off-season Analysis: New coach Jonathan Gannon takes over a team that can’t seem to get out of its own way. They did strengthen their offensive line by trading down and then up by taking Paris Johnson at No. 6. Their cornerback situation is a mess after losing Byron Murphy. They also had to find a defensive tackle to replace Watt and Zach Allen. They really didn’t do a lot in free agency other than pick White from the Eagles, who is a very solid player.
Los Angeles Rams:
Key Additions: QB Brett Rypien (FA-Broncos).
Key Subtractions: WR Odell Beckham Jr. (FA-Ravens), OLB Leonard Floyd (FA-Bills), DT Greg Gaines (FA-Bucs), PK Matt Gay (FA-Colts), QB Baker Mayfield (FA-Bucs), CB Jalen Ramsey (Trade-Rams), WR Allen Robinson (Trade-Steelers), DE A’Shawn Robinson (FA-Giants), S Nick Scott (FA-Bengals), ILB Bobby Wagner (FA-Seahawks),
Off-season Analysis: When Brett Rypien is one of your best pickups in the off-season, you know you are in salary cap hell. They don’t have high draft picks but did address the offensive line and defensive needs. They drafted Stetson Bennett on Day 3 to be the quarterback of the future. The Rams are going to have a very young team with Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald, and Cooper Kupp.
San Francisco 49ers:
Key Additions: QB Sam Darnold (FA-Panthers), C/G Jose Feliciano (FA-Giants), DE Clelin Ferrell (FA-Raiders), K Zane Gonzalez (Trade-Panthers), DT Javon Hargrave (FA-Eagles), CB Isaiah Oliver (FA-Falcons),
Key Subtractions: LB Azeez Al-Shaair (FA-Titans), OT Daniel Brunskill (FA-Titans), DE Samson Ebukam (FA-Colts), QB Jimmy Garoppolo (FA-Raiders), OT Mike McGlinchey (FA-Broncos), CB Emmanuel Moseley (FA-Lions), DE Charles Omenihu (FA-Chiefs), S Jimmie Ward (FA-Texans)
Off-season Analysis: This was a very busy off-season for the 49ers, but they lost more than they added. Even though they didn’t have a draft pick on the first day, they did a solid job, addressing some defensive needs in the draft after losing a ton of key players led by Ward, Moseley, and Omenihu. But they do things the smart way and let go of players who are productive but replaceable. Ward was 32 and has played in just two full seasons in his career. Rookie Ji’Ayir Brown from Penn State is a smart safety who should be able to start right away.
Seattle Seahawks:
Key Additions: G Evan Brown (FA-Seahawks), ILB Devin Bush (FA-Steelers), DE Dre’Mont Jones (FA-Broncos), FS Julian Love (FA-Giants), DE Jarran Reed (FA-Packers), ILB Bobby Wagner (FA-Rams).
Key Subtractions: DE Poona Ford (FA-Bills), WR Marquise Goodwin (FA-Browns), RB Travis Homer (FA-Bears), DT Quinton Jefferson (FA-Jets), S Ryan Neals (FA-Bucs), RB Rashaad Penny (FA-Eagles), DT Al Woods (FA-Jets),
Off-Season Analysis: The biggest move for Seattle was re-signing QB Geno Smith, who proved to be one of the elite NFC QBs last season. With Smith at 32, you have to wonder why they didn’t grab a younger QB in the draft. In terms of free agency, they did some odd things and it starts with signing 33-year-old Wagner and bringing him back to his old team. He’s on the decline, but can still play some. Devin Bush was an okay pickup if they can get him to reach his potential and he’s just 25. Dre’Mont Jones is a pass rusher who can’t stop the run. The loss of Neal will sting for the secondary
