Cam Newton Has Found A New Home In The Northeast

It took a while, but Cam Newton finally found a new home. The new home is with the New England Patriots according to ESPN.com. That is right, Cam will now be tossing the ball around for bill Belichick. It does kind of make sense after Tom Brady bolted for Tampa Bay in the offseason. That left the Pats with an unproven QB in Jarrett Stidham but now it looks as if Newton will be taking over the starter’s role.

The contract he signed is for one year at the league minimum but it has been laden with many incentives. Depending on how good of a year that Cam has, he could earn up to $7.5 million this year. Newton, who won the league MVP back in 2015, was released by the Carolina Panthers on March 24th and he has been out of a job until now.

Newton played in just two games last year and he lost both. Still, he was 68-55-1 in his nine-year career with the Panthers. His best year was 2015 when he went 15-1. Newton threw for 3837 yards with 35 TDs and just 10 INTs. In his career, he has thrown for 29,041 yards with 182 TDs and 108 INTs. Newton has also been good at running the ball, posting 4806 yards and 58 TDs in his career.

That will be interesting to watch as Bill Belichick has been used to a dropback passer in Brady, who has rushed for a total; of 606 yards and 22 TDs in his 18 years career so far. The most that Brady has rushed for in a season has been 49 yards. The most that Cam has run for in a season has been 754. How will Belichick handle this? Will he try and reel in Newton or just let him do his thing? We shall see.

It will also be interesting to see if Newton can make the same connection with Julian Edelman that Brady had. Marqise Lee, Harry N’Keal, and Mohamed Sanu will also look to be on the receiving end of some of Cam’s tosses.

The signing of Newton has also increase New England’s odds of winning the Super Bowl. They were at +2200 at several sportsbooks before the signing and they are now at +1700. Just when you think the Pats are going to be a down team, they find a way to be a contender again.
