That said, Los Angeles remains inconsistent on the defensive end. They've let opponents dictate tempo in too many recent games, and that vulnerability could be exposed tonight.

Golden State returns home fresh off a strong win over Seattle. Janelle Salaün and Gabby Williams are leading a balanced, efficient attack, and the Valkyries have built their identity around stout defense, elite rebounding, and smart half-court offense. Home court has been a major edge for them this season.

This matchup boils down to one key reality: the Sparks go as Plum goes. Golden State’s defensive game plan will be to make life difficult for Plum and force the rest of the Sparks roster to beat them. The Valkyries are one of the tougher defensive teams in the league, particularly when it comes to slowing down opposing guards.

Golden State simply looks like the more complete roster right now and enters this game in better overall form. While Plum’s scoring punch keeps LA competitive, the Valkyries defensive discipline and home-court advantage give them a clear edge.

Rookie right-hander Ryan Gusto gets the call for Miami, while Philadelphia sends out their ace Zack Wheeler. This is about as favorable a spot as the Phillies could ask for at home.

Pitching Breakdown

Zack Wheeler (PHI) has been one of the most reliable starters in baseball all season: 5-1 record, 2.22 ERA, 0.85 WHIP. He’s punched out 53 batters against just 12 walks and has held opponents to two earned runs or fewer in the majority of his starts. Wheeler consistently limits damage and gives his offense a chance to dictate the game. At Citizens Bank Park, he’s exactly the type of pitcher who can shut down a weak Marlins lineup.

Ryan Gusto (MIA) is still adjusting to big-league hitters. In limited action he sits at 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA. While he’s shown some strikeout stuff, he’s been vulnerable once he falls behind in the count — a dangerous trait against a veteran, power-heavy Phillies lineup. Unless Gusto delivers a career-best outing, this is a tough recipe for success on the road.

Team Edges

Philadelphia holds a clear offensive advantage, especially at home. The Phillies boast significantly more power and better overall lineup depth than Miami’s contact-oriented group. After getting shut out on Sunday, expect Philly to come out aggressive and put early pressure on Gusto.

The Marlins simply don’t have the firepower to go toe-to-toe with Wheeler, and Gusto will likely be fighting an uphill battle from the jump.

Spain enters this tournament as one of the legitimate title contenders, and they open with what should be a very comfortable matchup against debutants Cape Verde.

The Spaniards were absolutely ruthless in qualifying, netting 21 goals across just 6 matches. They boast incredible depth and talent across the squad, which allows them to control games with relentless possession and high pressing. Expect Spain to dictate the tempo from minute one, forcing Cape Verde into a deep, defensive shell.

Cape Verde, ranked 67th in the world, earned their first-ever World Cup appearance with an impressive qualification campaign, punching above their weight by advancing ahead of stronger regional sides. The Blue Sharks are a disciplined, physical, and confident unit. Their best chance is to stay ultra-compact defensively, absorb pressure, and hope to frustrate Spain for long stretches while looking for the occasional counter.

On paper, the technical gap, squad depth, and experience level are massive. Cape Verde’s organization may keep things relatively respectable in the early going, but Spain’s sustained pressure and superior quality should eventually break them down.

Prediction: Spain wins comfortably and covers the spread.

Spain collects all three points and gets off to a strong start in Group H. For Cape Verde, the realistic goal is limiting the damage and gaining valuable experience ahead of tougher tests against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
