Pivetta's recent report card makes the Under attractive. Since returning from the injured list, he has a 1.64 ERA in five starts. In September specifically, he allowed only three earned runs over 18.2 innings, then surrendered one run in 3.1 innings against Chicago in the Wild Card round.
May's overall recent numbers are poor, but his performance against this particular opponent has been dramatically better: a 1.23 ERA in three starts against San Diego this season.
The first two games of the series have produced five and seven runs, meaning neither has exceeded tonight's total. San Diego has scored only five runs in the series, while Milwaukee has scored seven.
Petco Park also gives the pitchers a more forgiving environment, and neither team should have any incentive to conserve its best relievers. San Diego faces elimination and Milwaukee can close out the series tonight.

There is independent support for the Under, including multiple expert positions on this matchup, and the personnel situation provides a legitimate fundamental argument.
Florida is without Aleksander Barkov, removing one of the league's premier two-way centers. The Panthers have scored only six goals through three games, with all three games requiring overtime. Los Angeles is missing Kevin Fiala, another significant offensive loss.
Florida's early underlying defensive numbers have also been better than its record might suggest. That matters more to us than simply looking at the Panthers' 1-0-2 start.
