Familiarity might breed some contempt here as these Iberian neighbors meet for the first time since Portugal scored a win on PKs last June in the UEFA Nations League finale in Munich. As last summer, a matchup to watch will be Nuno Mendes shadowing Lamine Yamal, and if Yamal can once again be held in relative check.
We’re still not sure, however, that Portugal has played its way into this tournament, and how much benefit Cristiano Ronaldo really is providing for Roberto Martinez. España has yet to conced a goal at the World Cup, more a function of La Furia Roja's dominant possession game, and one goal might be all it takes for one of these to qualify for the quarterfinals on Friday in Los Angeles.
